Borussia Monchengladbach stunned Bayern Munich 2-1 at Allianz Arena on Friday, January 7, 2022, even though Robert Lewandowski opened the scoring in the first half.
Robert Lewandowski scored his 20th goal of the German Bundesliga 2021-2022 season against Borussia Monchengladbach in the 18th minute. From that point, it was expected to be a straight win for Bayern Munich, but the visitors were able to turn things around within a short while.

To the dismay of Bayern Munich’s fans watching from home, the reigning German Bundesliga champions enjoyed their led over Monchengladbach for just 9 minutes before the visitors took control of the game.
Monchengladbach’s Florian Neuhaus canceled Robert Lewandowski’s match opener in the 27th minute. Four minutes after, Stefan Lainer headed home the winner in the 31st minute.
For the rest of the first 45 minutes, both Bayern Munich and Monchengladbach were unable to score more goals, hence, the first half ended 2-1 in favor of the visitors.
In the second half, Bayern Munich tried to break Monchengladbach’s defense but could not do so. Their 18 shots, 7 shots on target only produced a goal, thanks to Robert Lewandowski which was not enough to prevent the German giants from losing the league game.
In the 18 league games that Bayern Munich have played this season, the German giants have recorded 14 wins, a draw, and three defeats.
However, the defeats have not stopped them from leading the German Bundesliga table with 43 points in 18 games. Bayern are 9 points ahead of second-placed Borussia Dortmund.
Their next league game is against Koln and it is scheduled to take place on Saturday, January 15, 2022. After that, the Bundesliga champions will take on Hertha Berlin on January 23, 2022.
So far this season, Bayern Munich’s talisman, Robert Lewandowski has played 18 league games in which he scored 20 goals and provided an assist. He is currently the highest goalscorer of the league.
While in all competitions, the 33-year-old Polish striker has played 26 games in which he scored 31 goals and provided 3 assists for Bayern Munich. The Poland international has until June 30, 2023, before his contract with Bayern expires.
