Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola reportedly played a great role in Bayern Munich’s appointment of his former player Vincent Kompany as the club’s new manager.
The Bundesliga giants broke ranks to go down to the England second tier to pick Kompany as the new manager.
We reported earlier the club have announced the former Burnley manager as the new manager having agreed on a three-year contract with the Belgian.
Kompany’s emergence as Bayern Munich manager came more as a shock to football fans and pundits alike. With his relatively undeveloped managerial career, rumors linking the Belgian to the coveted role in the German top-flight were dismissed with ease.
It is understood before Bayern Munich went after Kompany, they had suffered setbacks with their prime targets for the role.
The push for Kompany was seen more or less as a last-ditch effort to fill the vacant dugout at Allianz Arena against preseason preparations for the next campaign
Bayern Munich CEO Dreesen said the club went for Vincent Kompany because of his creativity and knack for developing young players.
However, it has been revealed some underground moves made the incredible managerial leap possible for Kompany.
According to a report shared by Fabrizio Romano, Bayern Munich first contacted Pep Guardiola before making the move for Vincent Kompany.
In the words of Fabrizio Romano, it was Guardiola who convinced Bayern of Kompany’s abilities before the Bavarians pressed on with a move for the Championship winner.
“Bayern have asked Pep Guardiola’s opinion on Vincent Kompany after internal discussions revealed on Monday.
“The relationship between Bayern and Pep remains excellent.
“Guardiola spoke highly of Kompany as a talented coach, smart guy, and ideal candidate for the job,” Fabrizio Romano says.
While Guardiola’s recommendations must have landed Kompany the Bayern job, the relationship triangle between the three parties played a role as well.
Pep Guardiola coached Bayern Munich from 2013 to 2016 before joining Manchester City. He won three straight Bundesliga titles, including 2 DFB Pokal, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup with the club. He is still held in regard by Bayern Munich.
Vincent Kompany played under Pep Guardiola for three years from 2016 to 2019 before leaving for Anderlecht where he subsequently took a managerial role with the club after playing for one season.
