Republic of Ireland Sack Manager Stephen Kenny After 2024 Euro Qualifiers Deadlock

Republic of Ireland have sacked their national team manager Stephen Kenny after their 2024 Euro qualifiers nightmare.

Ireland FA statement confirming the sack of Stephen Kenny reads;

“Following a meeting this evening and a presentation to the Board by CEO Jonathan Hill and Director of Football Marc Canham.

“The FAI Board has decided that Stephen Kenny’s contract as Manager of the Ireland senior men’s national team will not be renewed following the conclusion of the UEFA EURO 2024 qualification process.”

Republic of Ireland were the weeping boys in Group B of 2024 Euro qualifiers with just two wins from five games.

They sit bottom of the group and have failed to qualify for 2024 Euros, including the playoffs.

Sources close to the Irish gaffer revealed Kenny was very much away he will be sacked as his country’s national team manager after Republic of Ireland drew New Zealand in their last match.

Kenny even confessed with tears that he knew that will be the end of the road for his managerial career with his country’s national team New Zealand draw.

“It may well be my last match, that has been well documented and if it is, so be it. I’ve had the privilege of managing my country.”

He added: “Of course it would be a dream to carry on but my instinct is that is not going to happen and the evidence would suggest it’s not going to happen.”

“And so do I, so does everyone. We will have to see. I’ve had amazing support from my staff and it’s been an amazing journey with the 21s and the last three years with the senior team.”

Who is Stephen Kenny?

Stephen Kenny, 52, is an Irish professional football manager known for his wealth of experience and success in the domestic Irish league.

Kenny established himself as an elite football manager in Republic of Ireland after he won Irish domestic league with Dundalk 8 times – the most number of times a domestic manager has clinched the Irish league.

Kenny began his managerial career with St Patrick’s Athletic in 1997 before joining Longford Town the next year in 1998.

Three years after he joined Bohemians as manager in 2001, he moved to Derry City in 2004. He has had managerial spells with other Irish clubs such as Shamrock, Dunfermline Athletic, and Dundalk.

Republic of Ireland was where he had his first stint as a national team manager and was handed the job in 2020 due to his unprecedented success on the domestic front with Irish clubs.
