Real Madrid have been crowned 2023/24 LaLiga Champions after title challengers Barcelona settled for a shock defeat to Girona.
It was a day of reckoning for the two LaLiga giants. While Real Madrid raced to a 3-0 victory over Cadiz to close in on the LaLiga title race, Barcelona failed to delay the Los Blancos’ celebrations by surrendering a 2-1 lead to settle for a 4-2 defeat to high-flying Girona.
Barcelona’s capitulation has seen the club fall 13 points behind Real Madrid. With four games left to wrap up the season, a maximum of 12 points will not be enough for the Catalan giants to catch up with the arch-domestic rivals, hence they have missed out on the race with Real Madrid crowned champions.
The Los Blancos’ LaLiga triumph has not fallen short of remarkable following what has been a difficult campaign marred with injuries to key first-team players.
The likes of Thibaut Courtois and Militao missed a huge chunk of the season due to ACL injuries. Key striker Vinicius Jr and Jude Bellingham have also had their fair share of incessant injuries.
However, they have held their nerves to wrestle the covered club trophy in the Spanish top flight.
It is the second time Carlo Ancelotti has won the LaLiga trophy with the club following his return in 2021.
The victory is a timely recipe and morale-booster ahead of the club’s Champions League semi-final second leg against Bayern Munich on Wednesday, May 9 at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The first leg ended 2-2 in Germany with both set on equal pedestal going into the return leg.
Meanwhile, Bayern Munich lost their last home League match to Stuttgart before the cracker against Real Madrid and will be hoping to pull a surprise in Santiago Bernabeu to book a place in the final at Wembley.
