After contract talks with Paris Saint-Germain broke down, Laliga giants Real Madrid and Premier League champions Manchester City are set to battle for Marquinhos’ signature in January.

The former Roma player is currently contracted at the club until summer 2022 with the Ligue 1 champions keen to extend his current deal. Since joining PSG in 2013, Marquinho has become a key player for Thomas Tuchel’s side, making over 250 appearances.

Marquinhos has won a host of domestic titles. He has an incredible five Ligue 1 titles to his name, as well as four French Cups, five League Cups and five Champions Trophies in seven seasons in France.

However, Le10sport claims that negotiations between PSG and the 25-year-old Brazilian have reached a brick wall over Marquinhos’ wages. The report added that the Ligue 1 side want to add two more years to the player’s current deal, but this disagreement could open the door for the defender to leave the Parisien in January.

Man City and Real Madrid are said to be interested in Brazilian centre-back after watching their defence suffer this season. Both clubs are alleged to have made contact with the player’s representatives over the possibility of Marquinhos joining either of them.

In City’s case, the Premier League side are in dire need of a defender after failing to replace former captain Vincent Company who left to join his home club Anderlecht and the injury to their star man Aymeric Laporte who suffered a long-term injury early in the season.

This injury rues have forced Pep Guardiola to use his defensive midfielder  Fernandinho as an emergency centre-back. He has also been forced to use unreliable Nicolas Otamendi and John Stones on some occasions.

The Citizens have already conceded 19 goals this season, despite letting in just 23 in the entirety of the previous campaign. And now Guardiola sees the Brazilan defender as the solution to his defensive problem. The City manager also wants Marquinhos to become his next big-money signing.
