It was another big moment for Real Madrid legend Marcelo as Fluminense won 2023 Copa Libertadores – a prestigious continental club trophy in South America.

Marcelo could not help the pent-up emotions as he broke down in tears after Fluminense scored a late winner against Boca Juniors in Copa Libertadores final.

Marcelo Copa Libertadores

Marcelo is one of the most decorated Brazilian players with 5 Champions Leagues, 6 La Liga titles, 2 Copa del Rey, 5 European Super Cups, 4 Club World Cups, and 5 Spanish Super Cups to his belt.

Adding the Copa Libertadores trophy to his shelf with his boyhood club was another career milestone for the Brazilian left back.

Speaking to MSN after the victory, Marcelo said; “Real Madrid will understand. It’s my most important title, at club level, because it’s the club that raised me,”

“I’m winning a very important title with my favourite club, the club that gave me all the tools to have my career, with the employees who saw me grow up. There’s nothing more rewarding than that. It’s priceless,” he added.

Marcelo hit the peaks of his career while playing for Real Madrid before he joined Greek side Olympiacos. After a short spell with Olympiacos, he headed homewards to his boyhood club Fluminense in Brazil where he has now won Copa Libertadores.

It is his first trophy with the club and the first time Fluminense have won Copa Libertadores. Marcelo inspired the club to a 2-1 victory over Argentine top side Boca Juniors.

German Cano gave Fluminense the lead in the first half but Boca Juniors fought back through Advincula’s equaliser.

The match dragged on with both sides unable to find the back of the net again before Kennedy did the magic for Fluminense in stoppage-time, scoring the match-winner to hand Fluminense their first Copa Libertadores trophy.
