After another 2-1 win over Granada on Monday night, Real Madrid will only be needing two points to clinch the La Liga trophy.
Although they later had to face some dangerous moment later in the game, the win moves to within one win of the La Liga title.
Knowing full well what is at stake, the Galticos turned on the heat against their hosts as Ferland Mendy, who is the 21st goal scorer for Real Madrid this season opened the scoring in the 10th minute.
The French defender opened the scoring with a ferocious finish from a tight angle. His countryman Karim Benzema doubled the lead some minutes later to put the Galaticos in cruise control in the first interval.
Real however had to endure a nervous second half after Darwin Machis fired through Thibaut Courtois’ legs to reduce the deficit for the hosts.
With the win, Zinedine Zidane’s men maintained a four-point lead over their nearest rivals Barcelona with two games remaining.
What Real Madrid need to win
Real Madrid will only be needing two points from the available six given their superior head-to-head record over Barca. The Galacticos secured four points against their rivals in the league this seaon. The first meeting ended in a goalless draw at the Camp Nou while Les Blancos win the reverse fixture 2-0 at the Bernabeau.
Next on their schedule is a home tie against fifth-placed, Villarreal, on Thursday. Villareal had suffered a 2-1 defeat on their turf against Real Sociedad, Real Madrid will complete their season at relegation-threatened Leganes on Sunday.
Zidane happy over win
Reacting to the victory, Zidane said with the jiob done, all that is needed now is to rest up for Thursday after his team secured their ninth successive win since La Liga resumed in June.
“We will be back training on Tuesday and we will be back on the pitch on Thursday. The final minutes were tough. Granada made us defend a lot in the second half.”
