The Bundesliga team lost 4-1 at home on Tuesday night, and Tedesco’s exit was sealed by that outcome as well as a lackluster start to the domestic campaign.

The 36-year-old Italian coach, who took over in December of last year, led Leipzig to victories in the German Cup and the Europa League semifinals, where they were defeated by Rangers.

They have only won one of their first five Bundesliga games this year, losing to Union Berlin and Eintracht Frankfurt on the road.

And after their European campaign against the Ukrainian opposition got off to a terrible start on Tuesday, Tedesco and his assistants Andreas Hinkel and Max Urwantschky were fired.

Oliver Mintzlaff, CEO of Leipzig, stated: “Releasing Domenico Tedesco was a really tough decision for us.

Last season, we had a good second half of the campaign with Domenico, and we made the Champions League.

“In addition, we won our first major title with the DFB Cup and thus played the most successful season in our young club history.

“We owe him and his coaching team a big thank you for that. Domenico is an excellent coach who will certainly continue to be successful.

“However, after a moderate start to the Bundesliga season, with five points from five games, especially after the most recent games at Eintracht Frankfurt and at home to Shakhtar Donetsk, we lacked the conviction that an immediate turnaround could take place with the current set-up.

“We have overall responsibility for RB Leipzig and want to achieve our goals.

“Therefore, in the overall assessment, we came to the conclusion that we need a new impetus.

“We regret that we are now parting ways and would like to expressly thank Domenico Tedesco and his team for the work they have done.

“We wish Domenico all the best for his sporting and private future.”

Due to their loss on matchday one, Leipzig now finds themselves playing catch-up in Group F and must travel to the reigning champions Real Madrid. The other member of the group is Celtic.

With their victory in Leipzig, Shakhtar made history by becoming the first Ukrainian team to play in the Champions League since Russia invaded the nation earlier this year.

It featured a gaffe by the goalie Peter Gulacsi, who gave the ball to Marian Shved with an open goal 30 yards out after trying to be too cunning.

Despite Leipzig’s Mohamed Simakan’s equalizer 12 minutes into the second half, they promptly gave up again to Shved.

Mykhaylo Mudryk and Lassina Traore scored additional goals to secure Shakhtar’s victory and end Tedesco’s career.
