Chelsea star Enzo Fernandez is canvassing for a new role at Chelsea next season as disclosed by his father, Raul Fernandez
Enzo Fernandez had a difficult start to life at Stamford Bridge after a £107m move to the Premier League.
Fernandez has shared in Chelsea’s misfortunes this season, missing out of European football next season after the club finished in the bottom half of the league.
Since arriving the club, Enzo Fernandez has been deployed mainly as a deep-lying midfielder with little incentive to move forward and join the attack.
At Benfica and Argentina national team, Enzo Fernandez plays mainly as an attacking and central midfielder leading attacks and creating spaces for strikers.
At Chelsea, the 2022 World Cup winner plays as a defensive midfielder in contrast to his normal role.
According to sources close to the player, Enzo Fernandez has been mulling over the limiting role in Chelsea’s stating IX and wants to play more as an attacking midfielder.
According to Evening Standard, Enzo Fernandez’s father, Raul Fernandez, has confirmed his son wants a new role at Chelsea from next season.
Chelsea have gone under different hands amidst their struggles in the just-concluded 2022/23 campaign with all the managers deploying Enzo Fernandez as a defensive and sometimes a central midfielder.
Despite playing in a less-desired role, Enzo Fernandez had continued with the Blues, starting all matches since arriving the club.
He has made 18 appearances for the club, with 2 assists and no goal.
However, it is believed Chelsea new manager will be tasked with a new squad plan to fit the £107m record signing should he want to harvest the best Enzo could offer.
Meanwhile, Raul Fernandez also revealed Enzo is ready to sit down with Mauricio Pochettino and discuss the need of the adjustment.
‘Enzo is comfortable, happy, and adjusting to London,’ Raul told the Evening Standard.
‘He is happy about the arrival of Pochettino. Next season? My son wants to be a champion.
‘I think (we will see Enzo play further forward next season). He was going to ask (Pochettino) to play further advanced.’
Chelsea may not struggle with a squad plan to suit Enzo Fernandez next season should they secure the services of Ecuador and Brighton midfield sensation, Moises Caicedo.
Moises Caicedo plays mainly as a defensive midfielder, fitting perfectly into the deep-lying role.
If he completes a move to Stamford Bridge, Mauricio Pochettino will then have to move Enzo Fernandez forward while Caicedo sits deep.
Futballnews understands Chelsea are closing on a deal to sign Moises Caicedo and Brighton are ready to part ways with the Ecuadorian despite brokering a new contract with the player.
Enzo Fernandez’s desire for a more attacking role is not out of place with the style and tactics of Mauricio Pochettino.
Pochettino plays a largely attacking football, building press around the ball and leaving the players more comfortable in possession of the ball.
Enzo will have to slug it out with Chelsea’s new arrival, Christopher Nkunku, who is also an attacking midfielder.
Pochettino will now face the task of adjusting the team to suit the two midfielders should he decided to yield to Enzo Fernandez’s demand and deploy him in an attacking role.
