PSV Eindhoven Confirm Exit of Head Coach, Ruud Van Nistelrooy

    PSG Eindhoven have confirmed the immediate exit of their head coach Ruud van Nistelrooy.

    An official statement released by the club revealed Ruud van Nistelrooy has left his role as the manager of the club because of “lack of support.”

    The former Manchester United player, turned manager, led PSV Eindhoven to a double silverware this season, winning the Dutch Super Cup and the Dutch Cup after 14 months into the job.

    According to reports, PSV Eindhoven were set to hold talks with the departing manager on Sunday to discuss his future before he suddenly tendered his resignation from his role as manager.

    Van Nistelrooy is leaving PSV Eindhoven in a good footing. Despite being 10 points behind Eredivisie champions Feyernood, they are edging on qualifying for Champions League playoffs next season.

    PSV Einhoven are three points above Ajax and just need a draw in their last game to secure Champions League spot.

    The club statement annoucing Ruud van Nistelrooy’s exit further revealed the Manchester United legend stepped down from his role after informing his staff and players.

    The club adds they regret the decision by van Nistelrooy to step aside and do thank him for his double silverware and a great Eredivisie campaign with the club.

    “van Nistelrooy told the first-team squad and coaching staff that he would be stepping down with immediate effect, due to a lack of support within the club.”

    “PSV regrets his decision and is grateful to him for winning the Johan Cruijff Shield and the Dutch Cup, and hopes to finish the season in second place,” the club statement read.

    Who is Ruud van Nistelrooy?

    Ruud van Nistelrooy is a Dutch professional football manager and former player. Born on 1 July, 1976 in Netherlands, Nistelrooy started his football career at a Dutch club Bosch in 1993.

    Playing as a striker, he made 69 appearances for the club, scoring 17 goals before joining Heerenveen in 1997. At Heerenveen, he made 31 appearances for the club, scoring 13 goals before joining PSV Eindhoven in 1998.

    At PSV Eindhoven, Ruud van Nistelrooy’s career began to peak as he smashed a career-record tally of 62 goals in his 67 appearances for the club.

    His stellar outing with the Dutch side made him an envy of Premier League clubs. He was signed by former Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson in 2001. After joining the Old Trafford club, Nistelrooy reached another career-record goal for a single club, scoring 95 goals in his 150 appearances for the club before joining Real Madrid in 2006.

    At Real Madrid, he scored 46 goals in 68 appearances. He ended his club career at Malaga in Spain in 2012.

    Nistelrooy was equally prolific for Dutch national team. He made his debut for the national team in 1998, winning 70 caps with 35 goals before calling time on his international career in 2011.

    As a player, Van Nistelrooy won the Eredivisie, Premier League, EFL Cup, FA Cup, Community Shield, and La Liga.

    He also won the 2004 UEFA European Championships with Netherlands.

    Managerial career

    Ruud van Nistelrooy started his coaching career in 2014 as an assistant coach for Netherlands senior men’s national team.

    In 2018, he was appointed PSV Eindhoven U-19 coach. His first stint as a first team manager was with Jong PSV in 2021.

    In 2022, he was appointed PSV Eindhoven manager. He signed a three-year contract that extended his stay at the club till 2025 but he resigned from his role on May 24, 2023, due to a lack of support from the club.
