PSG are ready to fire Leonardo following Kylian Mbappe’s transfer reversal, with a formal statement expected in the coming days.
After a tumultuous 2021-22 season, the Brazilian will step down as sporting director as the club tries to make significant changes.
Leonardo has served as PSG’s sports director for the past three years, playing a vital part in recruitment as the club has continued to dominate French football while simultaneously vying for a first Champions League title.
The Ligue 1 champions, on the other hand, are anticipating a summer of dramatic changes, with Leonardo among those expected to leave after a tumultuous 2021-22 season.
After the Mbappe scandal, Leonardo is expected to quit PSG
PSG’s first objective was to get a contract extension for Mbappe, who has been linked with a move to Real Madrid.
The 23-year-old has been linked with a move to the Santiago Bernabeu in 2021, and was largely expected to join the Blancos on a free transfer this summer, on the contrary, Mbappe confirmed his commitment to PSG.
Mbappe secured a lucrative new contract with Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday, tying him to the club until 2025, but reports believe that Leonardo had little say in the final discussions.
According to reports, the two did not always agree, and Mbappe did not want to continue working with Leonardo in the boardroom, despite PSG appearing to comply with his demands.
Who will take Leonardo’s place?
PSG have already found a replacement for Leonardo, with former Lille and Monaco sporting director Luis Campos being present in Paris last week, according to reports.
Campos was with Monaco when Mbappe made his senior debut, assisting on the club’s Ligue 1 title triumph in 2016-17.
He went on to play a similar role for Lille, who won the French league last season, but he is now a free agent, and Mbappe is apparently looking forward to reuniting with him at Parc des Princes.
