PSG legend and former Manchester United forward Edinson Cavani will leave Valencia this summer.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Edinson Cavani and Valencia are closing in on contract termination after just a season with the club.
Regarded as one of the best forwards from South America, Edinson Cavani signed for Valencia from Manchester United in 2022, joining the club on a two-year contract which was set to expire after the upcoming 2023/24 season. However, the 36-year-old is set to leave the club with both parties on the edge of reaching mutual agreement for contract termination.
Nicknamed the “Cazada” (meaning hunter), Cavani’s once-glittering career is obviously on a decline.
The Uruguayan forward hit the peak of his career when he joined Serie A giants Napoli from Palermo in 2010 on loan. The “Killer,” as he was fondly called by some fans, took Napoli by storm, scoring 26 goals in 35 Serie A appearances for the club.
After an impressive loan spell with the Gil Azzurri, Napoli signed Edinson Cavani on a permanent deal, using him as a frontline top striker.
Cavani continued on his prolific form, scoring 52 goals in 62 appearances in his two-year spell. He won Copa Italia in his first season with the club and won Serie A Golden Boot in his second season.
His standout performance for the Serie A giants caught the interests of French Ligue 1 giants, who signed him with a record fee of €64m. He was the most expensive signing ever in French football and the sixth most expensive player in the world.
Cavani won back-to-back domestic quadruples, anchoring PSG attack. He also won Ligue 1 Player of the year Award, including back-to-back Golden Boots.
After scoring 138 French Ligue 1 goals in 200 appearances, Cavani left PSG in 2020, refusing to sign a short term two months contract.
He joined Manchester United as a free agent in 2020, signing a one-year contract with an option of an extension. The prolific forward went ahead to extend his contract at the club, scoring 14 goals in 41 Premier League appearances after a two-year stint with the club.
Edinson Cavani’s career declined sharply at Manchester United. He made 25 Premier League appearances in his debut season with the club, scoring 10 goals with 3 assists.
In his second season, Cavani made only 15 appearances for Manchester United following the return of Cristiano Ronaldo. He left the club in 2022 when his contract expired with Valencia signing him as a free agent.
Edinson Cavani sparkled on his debut for Valencia, scoring a brace to snap the man of the match award. However, the Uruguayan striker has struggled to find his scoring boots since his debut.
He made 25 La Liga appearances for the club last season, scoring five goals. His dwindling form is believed to have been a factor in Valencia’s decision to call off his contract with one year left.
Meanwhile, the former Napoli sensation is still hoping to stay active in the game but not in Europe this time.
Edinson Cavani has been reportedly approached for a deal by Argentina top side Boca Juniors. A move to Boca Juniors will see the PSG legend return to his continent where he may likely hung the boots after a legendary football career.
