Ligue 1 champions Paris-Saint Germain have reportedly begun talks with Brazilian international Neymar’s representatives over a new contract. Neymar has been continually linked with a move to Barcelona, with the Catalan rumoured to be weighing up a bid to bring him back to the Nou Camp.

But according to French outlet Telefoot, the French club have already started negotiations with the Brazilian’s representatives about extending his current deal at the Parc des Princes.

ESPN had earlier reported that Neymar would consider committing his long-term future to the club so long as they could change their fortunes in the Champions League. Meanwhile, PSG and the Brazilian are optimistic about reaching an agreement before April or May.

The relationship between Neymar and PSG has been strained since last summer after the Brazilian tried to force a return to Barcelona, but a source told ESPN the player is settled in the French capital and the relationship between player and club is much better.

The forward has two-and-a-half years left on his contract and tying Neymar to a long-term contract would be a major coup for PSG. Also, informal talks have already taken place between PSG sporting director Leonardo and Neymar’s father.

Neymar has looked happy on the pitch, and is in sensational form since returning from injury and suspension, scoring 13 goals and seven assists in 15 matches for PSG in all competitions this season. He has also scored in each of his last eight matches to equal a club record.

Neymar’s partnership with Kylian Mbappe, with a supporting cast of Edison Cavani, Angel Di Maria and Mauro Icardi, has appeared exciting and dynamic under coach Thomas Tuchel as the club occupies the first position on the French League.

Earlier this month Neymar hinted that his future may lie elsewhere after admitting he was seeking ‘new challenges’.

“My goal is to win everything I can with Paris and the Brazilian national team,” he said at a Red Bull event.

“Reach the Champions League final, win the Copa America again, find new challenges.”
