Chelsea have been revealed to be the Premier League’s biggest spenders of all times in terms of the amount they spend in signing players.
The Stamford Bridge club have always invested heavily in new signings over the years to achieve maximum achievements every season.
Chelsea paid more than $200 million to sign two midfielders (Enzo Fernandes and Moises Caicedo), with many criticizing them for their huge investments.
These are the top 10 Premier League biggest spenders per season.
1. Chelsea (2022/23): £754 million
After Roman Abramovich left Chelsea as the owner, Boehly and Eghbali spent a whopping amount of 754 million on new signings.
The Chelsea board signed players like Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly, Wesley Fofana, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and Marc Cucurella.
Chelsea proceeded with the signings of Enzo Fernandez, Mykhailo Mudryk, Benoit Badiashile, Noni Madueke, and Joao Felix.
Even though the club made those significant signings, they still ended the season in 12th place on the Premier League table.
2. Chelsea (2023/24): £396 million
In the 2023/24 season, Chelsea spent a whopping amount of 396 million on new signings. Ecuador midfielder Moises Caicedo is the club’s most expensive signing. Chelsea signed the midfielder for a transfer fee worth £115 million.
They also signed Romeo Lavia, Lesley Ugochukwu, Christopher Nkunku, Cole Palmer, Nicolas Jackson, and Axel Disasi.
Chelsea also signed two goalkeepers, Roberto Sanchez and Djordje Petrovic, in the 2023/24 season. The West London team also signed some youngsters like Deivid Washington and Angelo.
Even though they spent huge money on transfers, the club ended up in 6th place in the Premier League table behind Tottenham Hotspur.
3. Manchester City (2017/18): £328 million
After Guardiola lost the 2016/17 Premier League title to Chelsea, he went ahead to spend heavily on new signings.
Guardiola signed Aymeric Laporte for a transfer fee worth £65 million. He also purchased Kyle Walker, Benjamin Mendy, Danilo, Ederson, Bernardo Silva, Douglas Luiz, and Jack Harrison.
After signing those players, Guardiola won his first Premier League title.
4. Chelsea (2017/18): £290 million
In the 2017/18 season, Chelsea spent £290 million on new signings in an attempt to defend the Premier League title they won in the 2016/17 season.
Antonio Conte, who was then the manager of Chelsea, signed Alvaro Morata, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Danny Drinkwater, Davide Zappacosta, Antonio Rudiger, and Oliver Giroud.
However, Chelsea failed to retain the Premier League title, but they won the FA Cup against Manchester United in the 2017/18 season.
5. Chelsea (2018/19): £281 million
The West London team spent £281 million on new signings during Maurizio Sarri’s reign as manager of Chelsea in the 2018/19 season.
Chelsea signed Kepa Arrizabalaga, Jorginho, Gonzalo Higuian, and Christian Pulisic. Sarri won the Europa League in the 2018/19 season against Arsenal.
6. Arsenal (2022/23): £251 million
In the 2022/23 season, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta strengthened his squad with expensive signings.
He spent £251 million signing Gabriel Jesus, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Fabio Vieira, Matt Turner, and Marquinhos.
Arsenal challenged for the Premier League title in the 2022–23 season, which made Arteta sign more reinforcements in the January transfer window.
The Gunners boast their squad with the addition of Leandro Trossard, Jorginho, and Jakub Kiwior. Despite signing world-class players, the team finished in second place in the Premier League table.
7. Manchester United (2017/18): £243 million
Jose Mourinho spent £243 million on new signings in the 2017/18 season. The former Manchester United manager signed Romelu Lukaku, Nemanja Matic, and Victor Lindelof.
In the January transfer window, the Portuguese manager signed Alexis Sanchez from rival Arsenal.
In the 2017/18 season, Mourinho took Manchester United to second place in the Premier League table, coupled with the FA Cup final against Chelsea.
However, he lost the 2017/18 FA Cup final against Chelsea via penalty.
8. Tottenham Hotspur (2023/24): £232 million
The Spur hierarchy spent £232 million in Ange Postecoglou’s first season as the club manager.
Even though the Australian manager lost Harry Kane to Bayern Munich, there were significant changes made to the Tottenham Hotspur team.
Postecoglou signed Brennan Johnson, James Maddison, Micky Van de Ven, Pedro Porro, Guglielmo Vicario, and Radu Dragusin.
Also, the manager signed Dejan Kulusevski on a permanent deal from Juventus.
9. Liverpool (2018-19): £223 million
During Jurgen Klopp’s historic 2018-19 season at Liverpool, the manager spent £223 million on new players.
They paid £53 million for Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson. The club also signed Naby Keita, former Monaco, keyman Fabinho, and Xherdan Shaqiri.
These players signed by Jurgen Klopp helped him finish in the second place behind Manchester City and ended the season with the Champions League title, beating Tottenham Hotspur in the final.
10. Manchester City (2023-24): £222 million
After Manchester City secured the treble in the 2022–23 season, they went on to spend a whopping amount of £222 million in the 2023–24 summer transfer window.
Guardiola spent £222 million on signing Croatian centre back Josko Gvardiol from RB Leipzig, Matheus Nunes, Jeremy Doku, Mateo Kovacic, and Claudio Echeverri.
In the 2023-24 season, Manchester City lost world-class players like Ilkay Gundogan, Riyad Mahrez, Aymeric Laporte, and Cole Palmer.
The Manchester City side went on to win only the Premier League.
