The fight for Premier League promotion for the 2021-22 season is nearing its conclusion, with the playoff final determining which team will grab the third slot.

Fulham and Bournemouth were both promoted automatically, as Fulham won the Championship.

Huddersfield Town and Nottingham Forest will now compete for the final promotion berth in the Championship playoff final on May 29 at Wembley Stadium.

Promotion to the Premier League is worth nearly $200 million for each club, while parachute payments (funds distributed by the Premier League to relegated clubs to help soften the blow of financial losses) over the next three seasons if they’re relegated straight back to the Championship will keep the clubs among the Championship’s big boys.

We’ve listed who has been promoted and who is still in the running.

Promoted to the Premier League for the 2022-23 season:

    Fulham (champions), Bournemouth

Huddersfield Town vs Nottingham Forest in the final.

Burnley has been relegated from the Premier League to the Championship as Leeds managed to stay in the competition on the final day.

Burnley relegated from Premier League as Leeds secure dramatic survival

The Clarets were beaten 2-1 by Newcastle United at Turf Moor, ensuring their relegation to the Championship following season. Meanwhile, Leeds United beat Brentford 2-1 away from home.

The Whites finished a difficult season with a win thanks to a last-minute goal from Jack Harrison, keeping them in the Premier League for a second season, finishing 17th — just above the relegation zone, albeit a point would have been enough to keep them out.

Burnley, on the other hand, have suffered the price for a terrible season in which long-serving manager Sean Dyche was ousted and interim manager Mike Jackson managed to get a tune out of his team – albeit not quite enough in the end.

Burnley has dropped out of the Premier League after six years, with only 35 points and seven wins. The Lancashire side made it to Europe during their stint in the Premier League, with Dyche leading the team to unprecedented modern heights.

Leeds, meanwhile, have been rewarded for taking the risk of sacking Marcelo Bielsa in the middle of the season. The renowned Argentine led the club to the Premier League, but he was released of his duties with the team 16th in the league, and Jesse Marsch took over.
