Premier League latest COVID-19 Update as Salah, Elneny are among 16 new positive cases

    Liverpool star, Mohammed Salah and his Arsenal counterpart, Mohammed Elneny are among the 16 positive cases reported in the Premier League latest round of COVID-19 tests.

    Salah and Elneny were believed to have been infected during the international break at Egypt camp. The Pharaohs have eventually qualified for the next African Cup of Nations (AFCON) scheduled for Cameroon.

    Egypt has been joined by Senegal and it was Salah’s teammate, Sadio Mane that scored the needed goal for his country to be part of the contingents that will be in Cameroon for the African showpiece.

    In the latest round of testing, the Premier League revealed 16 new positive coronavirus cases after testing 1,207 players and club staff members between November 9-15.

    It could be recalled that four positive cases were confirmed in last week’s round of testing.

    “The Premier League can today confirm that between Monday 9 November and Sunday 15 November, 1,207 players and club staff were tested for COVID-19.

    “Of these, there were 16 new positive tests.

    “Players or club staff who have tested positive will self-isolate for a period of 10 days,” A statement from the league read.

    Premier League action resumes after international break

    Premier League action will resume this weekend after the international break ends on Wednesday. By Friday, each players would have returned to their respective club sides and do a new round of COVID-19 tests.

    This has left Salah out of Leicester City’s clash while Elneny will also be out of the squad that will travel to Elland Road for Leeds United game. Both are currently isolating in Egypt after positive Covid test. It remains unknown when they will be allowed to travel back to England and complete their isolation.

    This is one of the highest numbers of positive tests seen so far in the league. It is closely followed by another the 10 positive cases recorded from September 21-27.

    68 people have tested positive for the virus in 11 rounds of testing this season.

    According to Reuters tally, over 1.3 million COVID-19 infections and over 51,000 deaths have been recorded in the United Kingdom.
