Darren England, who was the VAR official in the Premier League game between Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, has been banned from officiating any Liverpool game till the end of the season.

It was revealed that he would not be sacked due to the support of the Chief referee of the PGMOL, Howard Webb.

Also, Darren England was removed alongside his assistant VAR Dan Cook for this weekend Premier League fixtures.

The decision came after his horrible officiating, where he ruled out Luis Diaz’s goal for offside.

He followed due process, but after a mistake was spotted, he told the on-field referee, Simons Hooper, to continue with the game.

Furthermore, Darren England will miss out on the £1,200 he normally receives for Premier League matches.

He earns a whopping £150,000 a year and also officiates for the Europa League and the Conference League.

After the game, Liverpool demanded the audio in the process of making a decision. PGMOL didn’t hesitate in releasing the audio to the public.

Jurgen Klopp reacted after the audio was released, saying he wanted the game to be replayed due to the unprecedented nature of the blunder.

How PGMOL Treated Referees Who Made Mistakes in Officiating

Last season, a referee named Lee Mason cost Arsenal a match against Brentford after failing to rule out an Ivan Toney goal for offside.

After the game, Howard Webb went ahead to sack the official.

In addition, Lee Mason made other errors that frustrated the PGMOL.

Referee Jonathan Moss was made to sit out of Premier League matchday 2 after failing to award a penalty to Wolves against Manchester United in the 2023–24 Premier League season.

The game cost Wolves a point after an impressive performance against Manchester United. However, Jonathan Moss had to apologize to Wolves manager Gary O’Neil.

In a match between Crystal Palace and Brighton on February 11, 2023, John Brooks, who was in charge of the VAR, made a horrible decision after denying Brighton a goal.

He ruled out the ball for offside and was taken off VAR duties for two matches.

Other Mistakes Made by Darren England in the Premier League

As an on-field referee, Darren England was sent by the VAR to check the monitor to review a penalty given in a match between Aston Villa and Crystal Palace.

After checking the monitor, Darren England decided to stick with his original decision and failed to overturn the penalty.

The Premier League’s Key Match Incident Panel claimed it was a wrong decision.

Also, as a VAR official, Darren England should have given the goal scored by Burnley against Nottingham Forest, but it was ruled out for handball.
