The manager of Bayer Leverkusen, Peter Bosz, is not happy with what has become of Kai Havertz at Chelsea since he joined the club during the 2020 summer transfer window. He argued that he can’t figure out how the 21-year-old attacking midfielder fit into Frank Lampard’s plans at the Premier League club.

Peter Bosz was the main football manager behind the exposure Kai Havertz got that made Chelsea pay £70million to acquire his services in a five-year deal.

Before the Germany international left Bayer Leverkusen to Chelsea at the end of the 2019-2020 season, he played 45 games in all competitions, scoring 18 goals and providing 9 assists.

Under coach Peter Bosz, Kai Havertz played 64 games in all competitions, scoring 29 goals and providing 10 assists. The 57-year-old Dutch tactician used the 21-year-old German footballer mostly as an attacking midfielder.

But since Havertz’s big-money move to Chelsea, he has found it difficult to maintain the momentum he was enjoying at Bayer Leverkusen. He has struggled to establish himself despite a couple of opportunities that Lampard has given him to excel.

The English tactician has tried him as an attacking midfielder, center-midfielder, and even left-winger, yet, the club has not been able to get the best of him.

His form became worst when he contracted the dreaded coronavirus late last year. The player admitted that he found it difficult to regain his fitness as the coronavirus infection kept him out of football for three weeks.

“It was like a very bad flu for me so I think now I know it is very bad for people. Before I sometimes thought, ‘OK it is not so bad’ but now I get it and I know for older people and people who had illnesses before it can be very bad,” Havertz said in December.

“We all have to look out for each other. To be honest, it was personally very hard.”

Since he joined Chelsea, the Germany international has played 21 games in all competitions, scoring 4 goals and providing 5 assists. Despite his effort, fans and critics of Chelsea believe that the player has not been doing enough.

Hence, Peter Bosz urged Frank Lampard to protect Kai Havertz in the media, adding that he is yet to see the idea the Chelsea coach has for him.

“As for Kai, I can see why Chelsea brought him in but I cannot yet see the exact idea Frank Lampard has for him”, Bayer Leverkusen’s manager told The Athletic.

“It’s really good that he protects him in the press, though. But in the end, you must deliver, you must score goals and make goals. For a €100 million transfer you must play, and he isn’t.”
