After losing the Premier League crown to Liverpool, Manchester City has set another milestone for Premier League teams after Riyad Mahrez became the fifth player of the team to record double-figure in a season.

The Algerian international scored his tenth of the season against Newcastle United in a 5-0 hammering at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday.

This is now the first time that a Premier League side will have five different players score at least ten goals in a single season. Mahrez’ scored his 10th of the campaign when he slotted home Kevin De Bruyne’s cut-back to make it 2-0 against the Tyneside club.

De Bruyne is on 11 goals with Gabriel Jesus, who broke his nine games drought with the opener against Steve Bruce’s side. Sergio Aguero is the top scorer of the team with 16 goals, and he is followed by Raheem Sterling, who netted the last goal of the thrashing with 13.

Manchester City matches 1984 record

The last time such feat was recorded in the English top-flight was in 1984-85 by Everton before the league was renamed English Premier League over three decades ago.

City has scored 83 goals in the league this season, nine more than newly-crowned champions Liverpool. But that wasn’t enough as they are still 23 points behind The Reds with five matches remaining. City will be blaming themselves for losing many matches this season with 1-0 loss suffered at St Mary’s being their ninth.

Pep Guardiola’s men will now be hoping to wrap up the season in second place as they are currently being separated from the third and fourth place on the log with nine and ten points, respectively.

Other attention of the club will be the July 18 semi-finals FA Cup clash against Arsenal as they hope to retain the trophy after winning the league cup.

They could as well go on to win the UEFA Champions League after defeating Real Madrid in the first leg of the last 16 at the Bernabeau.

With Lisbon chosen as the venue of the final, UEFA will have the last eight of the tournament in the City as respective clubs would have completed their league engagements.

City is also expected to get a verdict from the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) over an appeal of the UEFA ban.
