Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has spoken about his future with the club and links to England’s coaching job.
The 53-year-old will run out of his Manchester City contract at the end of the ongoing 2024-25 season and has been linked to a possible exit from the club after that.
When asked about the likelihood of him continuing with the club with a new contract the Spaniard refused to lift the lid on his plans.
According to him, he has yet to decide whether he will continue or back out, adding anything can happen.
“I have not decided on anything but everything can happen. So, I don’t know,” he said.
Pep Guardiola Manchester City’s contract
Guardiola signed a new two-year contract with Manchester City in 2023 following a prolific run with the Premier League dominoes. He has a few months left on his deal and could leave at the end of the season.
Futballnews understands Manchester City are eager to retain the Spaniard on a new contract but will hope to have him agree to the new deal.
Speaking after winning the 2023-24 Premier League title – his sixth with the club – Guardiola hinted at a possible exit from the club when his contract expired.
He revealed he is closer to leaving Manchester City than staying but added renewing his contract could also be an option.
“I am closer to leaving than staying but open to talks with the club,” he said.
Guardiola joined Manchester City in 2016 and has firmly established himself as Manchester City’s best manager.
He is regarded as one of the best managers to have graced the English elite division following his unrivaled dominance of the domestic scene with City.
He has led the club to win six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and four League Cups, including the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.
Pep Guardiola links to England job
With his contract with Manchester City expiring soon, Pep Guardiola has been linked to the England coaching job after Gareth Southgate resigned from the role.
England U-21 head coach Lee Carsley is now the interim manager and is also in the running to nail down the top job but Guardiola is still considered a strong contender given his pedigree and experience.
When asked about reports linking him to the job, Guardiola played down the rumours, saying it isn’t true as he is still Manchester City manager.
“It is not true. I am still Manchester City manager,” he said.
The former Barcelona manager’s casual response underscores his commitment to his Man City role. However, it is not enough to foreclose the possibility of him emerging as the head coach of the Three Lions.
Current interim boss Lee Carsely seemed to rule himself out of the job when he hinted England needed a trophy-winning manager with a good wealth of experience to take charge of the team.
Guardiola has been described as the most qualified in that aspect despite not having managed a national team before. His two trebles with Barcelona in 2008 and recently Manchester City have seen him emerge as one of the most successful managers in European football, competent enough to take up any role.
