The manager of Manchester City, Pep Guardiola, has declared the 2020-2021 Premier League title win as the hardest among the three league titles he has won for the club.

Manchester City became champions of the Premier League on Tuesday, May 12, 2021, after Leicester City defeated second-placed Manchester United 2-1 at Old Trafford to continue their fight for a top-four finish.

The win left Manchester United with 70 points in 35 games with three games left to play. Manchester City had to be declared champions because Manchester United cannot overtake City’s 80 points even if they win their remaining three games.

After it was confirmed that Manchester City have been declared the champions of the Premier League for the third time in four years, coach Pep Guardiola said he has never had it this difficult since he has been coaching in England.

Recall that the Spanish coach joined Manchester City in 2016. In his first season, he couldn’t win the Premier League title. He started dominating English football during the 2017-2018 season when he won his first Premier League title.

Pep Guardiola continued with his excellent performance at the club by winning the 2018-2019 Premier League title. He was not able to repeat the same feat in the 2019-2020 season, thanks to Liverpool.

When the 2020-2021 season started, Manchester City were looking like a team that will struggle throughout the season. They suffered two defeats and three draws between September and November 2020.

It was until in December 2020 Manchester City started enjoying a steady ride in the Premier League despite playing without a top 9 due to injuries to Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus.

It was so bad for Pep Guardiola that he had to depend on his midfielders to get the goals. This resulted in Ilkay Gundogan who is a midfielder becoming the club’s highest goalscorer of the season and in the Premier League.

The 30-year-old German midfielder has scored 16 goals in all competitions. He scored 12 of the goals in the Premier League, the highest in his career.

“This has been a season and a Premier League title like no other,” Guardiola told the Manchester City official website. “This was the hardest one.

“We will always remember this season for the way that we won. I am so proud to be the manager here and of this group of players.

“At the start of every season, the Premier League is the most important title for us. This is the one where you have to be there every three days, playing all your rivals home and away.

“Only by being the very best, week in week out, can you win this competition. It is a huge success.”

As it stands, Manchester City have won 5 Premier League titles in the club’s history. Pep Guardiola is expected to give the club their first UEFA Champions League title on May 29 if they are able to defeat Chelsea in the final of the competition.

Even though Manchester City have been named champions of the Premier League this season, they will have to play their remaining three league games starting with the game they have against Newcastle United on Friday, May 14.
