The president of FC Barcelona Joan Laporta believes that the club’s right-winger, Ousmane Dembélé is better than Paris Saint Germain striker Kylian Mbappe.

Laporta stated this when he was giving an update on the club’s plan to renew the contract of Ousmane Dembélé who has been a player of the club since August 25, 2017.

Recall that Dembélé joined the Spanish giants from Borussia Dortmund for a transfer fee worth €135 million.

Since then, the France international has scored 30 goals and provided 21 assists in 121 appearances in all competitions which are below the expectation of most fans of the club.

He has been struggling to play regularly due to the consistent reoccurrence of injuries. His injury woe has forced him to play just 3 games in all competitions so far this season.

In the 73 minutes that Ousmane Dembélé has played for FC Barcelona this season, the 24-year-old winger has not scored and has not provided an assist.

His contract with FC Barcelona will expire on June 30, 2022, and FC Barcelona are still interested in renewing his stay at the club despite his fitness issues.

In an interview with TV3, Joan Laporta described the negotiations between the club and Ousmane Dembélé over a possible contract extension as complicated.

He, however, noted that he is confident that the Frenchman who is heavily linked with a move to Premier League side, Newcastle United, would sign a contract extension at Barca.

“We have a very good relationship with Dembélé and he wants to stay. We also want him because he is a great player”, he said. “These are situations that need negotiation with the representatives who want the best for the player. I am enthusiastic about Dembélé, he is better than Mbappé”

The Kylian Mbappe that Laporta is comparing Dembélé with has been unstoppable since he joined PSG from Monaco for a transfer fee worth €145 million.

So far this season, the 22-year-old French striker has scored 9 goals and provided 12 assists in 20 games in all competitions for PSG.

However, just like Ousmane Dembélé, Mbappe’s contract with PSG will expire on June 30, 2022. PSG have been trying to renew his stay in Paris but the Frenchman wishes to join Real Madrid.

Madrid have also been trying to bring Mbappe to Spain but PSG have been trying all they could to frustrate the effort of the Spanish side to secure Mbappe’s signature.

However, all things being equal, Mbappe could sign a pre-contract deal with Madrid in January and might join the Spanish side next summer on a free transfer.
