Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could not hide the fact that his team, Manchester United narrowly escaped from Amex Stadium on Saturday with the three maximum points in a match that saw their hosts, Brighton create loads of scoring chances from the start to finish. The tactician accepted the fact that his team was lucky to have escaped with the 2-3 win over a very resilient Brighton.

The match could be said to be one of the most controversial Premier League matches in the history of the league. It was already looking like the two opposing teams would share the points in a match that saw Referee Chris Kavanagh add 10 minutes to the regular time.

Before the added time, Manchester United was already winning 1-2 courtesy of an Own Goal from Brighton’s Lewis Dunk three minutes after Neal Maupay has put Brighton ahead from the spot-kick. Marcus Rashford then scored Manchester United’s second goal of the match in the 55th minute.

When the match was approaching the 90th-minute mark, the worse fans thought would happen was that Manchester United would add another goal to make it 1-3 but Brighton broke United’s heart by scoring the equalizer in the 4th minute of the added 10 minutes.

Just when Manchester United thought the best they would get was a point, Referee Chris Kavanagh went to consult the pitchside monitor after he has blown the final whistle of the match. At the end of his consultation, he confirmed that Brighton’s Neal Maupay committed a handball in his own eighteen-yard box before the Final whistle.

Bruno Fernandes converted the goal in the 10th minute of the added time to give Manchester United the desired 2-3 victory.

“I don’t think we’ve ever scored after the final whistle, that’s right,” Solskjaer said after the match. “But, of course, the handball was before full-time so it’s probably the right thing to do.

“For us, it’s a big thing. We have discussed it this season, we need more late goals. We were the team that lost the fewest games – apart from Liverpool – last season. But we drew too many. To get two extra points after conceding the equalizer so late on is a great boost for us.

“We’ve got to be honest enough to say they created the most chances. They had loads of shots, they had big chances. We need to improve a lot in the weeks coming forward.”

Manchester United’s win over Brighton on Saturday was the club’s first Premier League match in the 2020-2021 Premier League season. They lost their first Premier League match of the season 3-1 in favor of Crystal Palace on September 19. Their next Premier League match is against Tottenham on October 4.
