Manchester United have announced that coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has left the club which means that his 3 years reign at Old Trafford is officially over.

Recall that Manchester United appointed Solskjaer in 2018 in an acting capacity after the club sacked coach Jose Mourinho due to a poor run of games.

In the remaining parts of the 2018-2019 season, the Norwegian tactician was so impressive that the club decided to make his deal with the club permanent.

His best season as Manchester United coach was last season in which he led the club to a second-place finish in the Premier League. He also led the Red Devils to the final of the Europa League but lost it to Villarreal.

However, in the 2021-2022 season, Solskjaer could not build on the successes he recorded at the club last season even though the club’s board supported him to sign Cristiano Ronaldo from Juventus, Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund, and Raphael Varane from Real Madrid.

Hence, the club decided to let the 48-year-old Norwegian tactician go hours after he led Manchester United to record a humiliating 4-1 defeat at Watford on Saturday, November 20, 2021.

In his last 6 Premier League games in charge of Manchester United, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer recorded four defeats, a draw, and a win. These poor stats pushed Manchester United out of the top four.

Before he was sacked, Manchester United had recorded five defeats, 2 draws, and 5 wins in 12 Premier League games. They are currently occupying the 7th spot with 17 points, 12 points away from first-placed Chelsea.

It is worthy to note that pressure increased on the coach after Liverpool visited Old Trafford to defeat the Red Devils 5-0. Two weeks after, Manchester City visited Old Trafford and dominated United for 90 minutes. The blue side of Manchester left the once dreaded Theatre of Dreams with a 2-0 victory.

In a statement Manchester United published on their official website to announce his departure, the club stressed that Solskjaer who was a player of the club between 1996 and 2007 remains a legend of the club.

Meanwhile, the club’s first-team coach, Michael Carrick will be in charge of the Red Devils while the club continues its search for a coach that will lead the club until the end of the 2021-2022 season.

The club’s statement read: “Manchester United announces that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has left his role as manager.

“Ole will always be a legend at Manchester United and it is with regret that we have reached this difficult decision. While the past few weeks have been disappointing, they should not obscure all the work he has done over the past three years to rebuild the foundations for long-term success.

“Ole leaves with our sincerest thanks for his tireless efforts as Manager and our very best wishes for the future. His place in the club’s history will always be secure, not just for his story as a player, but as a great man and a Manager who gave us many great moments. He will forever be welcome back at Old Trafford as part of the Manchester United family.

“Michael Carrick will now take charge of the team for forthcoming games, while the club looks to appoint an interim manager to the end of the season.”
