Matt Turner is set to leave Arsenal this summer as Nottingham Forests have agreed a deal with Arsenal for the player.
The 29-year-old New Jersey-born goalkeeper will hope to open a new chapter in his career after just a season with Arsenal.
Details of the agreement between the two clubs for the player reveals Matt Turner will be joining Nottingham Forest for £11m. Nottingham Forest will pay £7m transfer fee while £3m will be paid as add-ons depending on the success of the player at Nottingham Forest.
Matt Turner saw his career plunge to an all-time low after joining Arsenal from MLS side, New England Revolution in 2022.
Arsenal signed Matt Turner for £6m from New England Revolution on a three-year contract.
Before joining Arsenal, Turner was a top choice goalie for New England Revolution, making 102 MLS appearances for the club. At the Emirates, Matt Turner has seen his career take a wild tumble as he struggles to start ahead of Arsenal first choice goalie, Aaron Ramsdale.
Since joining Arsenal in June 2023, Matt Turner has not made a single Premier League appearance for the Gunners but has managed only 7 appearances in other competitions with the team with 3 clean sheets.
Despite his travails in London, Turner still retained his place as a first-choice goalkeeper for USA national team. He made Gregg Berhalter’s 2022 World Cup squad and made the list of players who featured in all USA World Cup matches.
Turner won the 2021 COCACAF Gold Cup and 2013 CONCACAF Nations League with the USA. Since making his debut in 2021, he has racked up 32 appearances for the team.
Matt Turner had two years remaining in his Arsenal contract but was keen to leave the club this summer after struggling to break into the club’s starting lineup.
Despite being used as a backup to Aaron Ramsdale, Turner is regarded as a top goalkeeper with a lot of experience.
He will be the second big-name player joining Nottingham Forest this summer after the club completed the signing of Manchester United top star Anthony Elanga on a five-year contract.
The Tricky Trees signed two goalkeepers on loan last summer – Keylor Navas from PSG and Dean Henderson from Manchester United.
Keylor Navas has reportedly returned to PSG following his loan spell with the club with Henderson linked to a permanent move to City Ground since falling out of favour at Manchester United.
With Dean Henderson’s future still hanging in the balance, Matt Turner is now Steve Cooper’s permanent solution to the club’s goalkeeping problems, further deepening uncertainty on Dean Henderson’s future.
According to David Ornstein, Arsenal and Nottingham Forest have agreed terms for Turner for £10m with the player expected to complete his medical this week before signing contract as new Nottingham Forest player.
