Stoke City will face Coventry City this weekend, and despite the Potters not having much to play for in the last game of the season, seeing Nick Powell back in action could give them a boost.

The player is training, according to the club’s official website, and there’s a potential he’ll play a cameo role for the club this weekend. With the 28-year-old out of action since March, this would be a huge boost for Stoke fans. He played a half against Middlesbrough last weekend, but he could be in line for a bigger role against the Sky Blues.

The midfielder has been one of the Potters’ most prolific players throughout his time there, scoring six goals and providing one assist in 17 Championship appearances despite being sidelined with an injury this season. His injuries are a concern, but he has the potential to be one of Stoke’s most influential players when fully fit and in action. With the season coming to an end, the club could benefit from Powell’s return to more frequent action, as he did last weekend and again this week.

“Powell has been back in and around it this week on the back of a decent cameo last weekend against Middlesbrough,” Holden told the club’s official website when asked if Powell could play.

Powell scored 12 goals as a first-team player last season, but owing to injuries, he has spent more time in the stands this season. They could likely benefit from having him more involved next season if they can keep him fit and get him in good shape before the summer.

Nick Powell is still a championship-caliber player. Even though he has only played in less than 20 league games for Stoke this season, he has been able to provide lots of attacking options when he has been on the field and is still vital to the club. The problem is keeping him healthy and capable of contributing. It’s great to see Powell put up big stats when he’s fit, but he’s been out with injury for the majority of the season and so hasn’t been able to give the Potters what he wants.

Stoke City hasn’t had the best season. Early hopes of a play-off drive have faded, and they must now settle for a slot in the division’s midfield. They could have been much higher if Powell was in better shape. If they can win this weekend, with the former Manchester United star playing a key role, it may be a portent of things to come from the team next season.
