Newcastle United Vs Arsenal Premier League match has ended in another heartbreak for the Gunners. Alexander Isak’s goal extended the club’s winless run in the Premier League to three matches.

The Swedish striker scored just 12 minutes into the game and that was all the Magpies needed to condemn the 2023-24 Premier League runners-up to their second defeat this season.

Newcastle United Vs Arsenal Premier League records

Newcastle went into the game with a superior record over the Gunners in their last three meetings.

The Eddie Howe-led side had clinched two victories in their last three meetings against the Mikel Arteta-led side, losing once.

Also, the last time Arsenal visited St James Park for a Premier League tie last season, it ended in a narrow 1-0 loss. Anthony Gordon scored a controversial winner, which was checked three times by VAR, as the Gunners settled for a defeat against the Tyneside outfit.

A win for Newcastle United again would see the club complete their first home double against the Gunners for the first time in over two decades.

While the head-to-head record favoured the home side, they went into the game at the back of a winless five-match run in the English flight, losing three and drawing two.

Their last home defeat against Fabian Hurzeler’s Brighton ended their 11-match unbeaten streak at St James Park.

Meanwhile, Arsenal went into the game at the back of a not-so-stellar run recently in the Premier League. They could only salvage a point in their last two fixtures, losing 1-0 to Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium and then drawing Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium.

They conceded 2+ goals in four of their last five Premier League fixtures with the Bournemouth loss an exception.

Newcastle United Vs Arsenal major highlights

Newcastle United kicked off proceedings with a strong start. After a slew of attacking threats, they took a deserved lead just 12 minutes into the proceedings.

Anthony Gordon, who netted the controversial winner in the last meeting between the two sides at Tyneside, was left unmarked on the right wing to curl home a delicious cross into the box for Alexander Isak. Isak planted a brilliant and powerful header into the top-left corner, leaving David Raya with absolutely no chance to gather the ball.

The goal saw Newcastle United go into a quick lead after a brilliant team play.

Eight minutes later, Anthony Gordon was left again unmarked on the right. The England star crossed again into the box to find Joelington who missed it at the far post much to the relief of the under-pressure Gunners. A poke by Joelington would have been enough to double the lead for the home side.

Arsenal’s biggest chance in the first half came in the 28th minute during a goal-mouth scramble in the hosts’ box after a corner kick. Mikel Merino had the ball on a platter to nail home the leveler following the scramble but his strike hit Newcastle United player, missing the target.

The Gunners began to build momentum in the game after Merino’s missed chance. They dominated proceedings going forward from the half-hour but weren’t close to an equalizer until the last touch of the ball in first-half extra time when Newcastle United’s goalkeeper Nick Pope was forced to make a terrific save.

The rebound from the save fell for Mikel Merino who attempted a shot again but his effort was effectively gathered by the England goalkeeper. The first half ended with Newcastle United leading, thanks to Isak’s stunning header.

Arsenal started the second half well but were still struggling to create chances.

At the half-hour, Arteta took off Gabriel Martinelli for Ethan Nwaneri while Oleksandr Zinchenko came in for Mikel Merino.

The subs had little impact with the visitors still lacking inspiration to find the equalizer. In the 70th minute, Ben White came on for Jurrien Timber while Gabriel Jesus was brought on for Leandro Trossard.

Jorginho was also later subbed on for Thomas Partey but it was still a deadlock for the Gunners at St James Park.

Towards the final minutes, Arsenal continued to build pressure on the hosts but the Magpies showed no signs of caving in.

In the stoppage time, Ethan Nwaneri had a chance to pull the Gunners level. Having the ball, he cut inside but then lashed a wild attempt off-target.

Arsenal’s biggest chance for an equalizer came two minutes after Ethan Nwaneri’s miss. Bukayo Saka had crossed the ball into the box and Rice, who was left unmarked, had his attempt narrowly missed the target.

And that was all the visitors could muster as Newcastle United held on to complete a back-to-back Premier League win over Arsenal at St James Park since 1994.

Following the outcome of the match, Arsenal still retain the third spot on the Premier League table with 18 points but could drop deeper down if Aston Villa and Chelsea bag win in their matches.

Newcastle United climbed to 8th place on the table with 15 points from four wins, three draws, and three wins.
