Netherlands vs USA: Denzel Dumfries’ performances helped the Netherlands end the America’s dream of going to the quarterfinals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The Netherlands scored two goals in the first half, both by former Manchester United players Memphis Depay and Daley Blind.
USA substitute Haji Wright scored in the 78th minute to give the Americans hope of getting an equalizer in the match. Minutes later, Inter Milan’s Dumfries scored the winning goal, thanks to an assist from Daley Blind.
Dumfries provided assists from the right side for the first two goals, and he was arguably the best Dutch player on the pitch today.
Before this meeting, Holland had managed four shots on target in the competition while the USA had mustered only two, both of which had gone in.
Less than three minutes into the match, Tyler Adams played the part of Christian Pulisic. The Chelsea winger had to control the ball before shooting it, and it was stopped by Netherlands goalkeeper Andries Noppert, who was able to save with his foot.
That appeared to be the Americans’ declaration of intent, and for a brief period of time they were in control as the Dutch sat back across the edge of their penalty area.
Another USA raid soon followed, this time down the right as Weston McKennie crossed in the direction of Pulisic, but the ball was diverted.
It was expected given how brilliantly Berhalter’s men had performed in their 0-0 draw with England the previous week.
However, the Dutch made a breakaway to score just when it seemed the half’s rhythm had been established.
Tim Weah who has been playing to his best ability, made an attempt from the edge of the box which was stopped by Netherlands Noppert. In addition, the USA offered nothing little as they tried to get back into the game.
However, they did pose a threat almost right away when McKennie met a corner and Tim Ream headed the ball towards goal, where Cody Gakpo of all players cleared off the line.
Another low cross from Dumfries came dangerously close to being diverted into his own goal by a white-shirt defender at the other end of the field. Matt Turner stood firm enough to make a save.
The United State of America have themselves to blame as they looked poor at the back.
The Netherlands have been impressive and have shown a lot of improvement especially against the American team.
Louis Van Gaal is already getting the credit he deserves as his team showed elements of a potential World Cup favorite.
