Despite recent challenges to consistency, Nemanja Matic has urged dissatisfied Manchester United fans to “remain supportive of the squad,” pointing out that underperforming players are “trying [their] best” to put things right.

The Red Devils are set to finish the 2021-22 season without a Champions League berth or a major trophy, and their worst-ever Premier League point total is on the way.

With new coach Erik ten Hag on the way from Ajax, Matic is hoping for better days for an ambitious club that is working hard to get back on track after another period of frightening deterioration.

Nemanja Matic has urged dissatisfied Manchester United fans to "remain supportive.

Matic will leave United at the end of his contract this summer. In a chat with Manchester United’s official website, Matic said: “I know we’ve had a couple of difficult seasons, but I just want the supporters to know that, at the training ground, we’re doing our best, and United will definitely come back. United will return, though it will take some time. Maintain your commitment to the group. Hold hands. “

After five years with the Red Devils, the 33-year-old midfielder is looking forward to a fresh challenge. Since he has been at United, he has made over 180 appearances but was unable to end United’s trophy drought. While this is a cause of concern, Matic has enjoyed his time in Manchester and hopes to be remembered warmly by a devoted following.

“I hope the fans recognize what I’m doing on the pitch,” he stated as he bid farewell. “I also aim to set an example off the field. Not only on the pitch but also off it, I tried to be a Manchester United player. I understand the significance of this badge to our supporters, so you must have it.

“I shall miss the players, but also the personnel that surrounds them: the kit man, the physios, and the doctors. Everyone. I don’t want to leave anyone out. United employs some truly exceptional individuals. They may be hidden from view, yet they are vital to the team. I’m incredibly delighted that I had the opportunity to work with them, and they will undoubtedly be my friends forever.

Matic has already been waived off at Old Trafford after appearing in a 3-0 win against Brentford on May 2, and he will be trying to make one final appearance when the side which is still working under interim manager Ralf Rangnick faces Crystal Palace on Sunday.
