Napoli won the Italian Serie A title for the first time in 33 years on Thursday, May 4, 2023, afterwards, the celebrations came with massive chaos.
The Italian daily newspaper La Repubblica reported that the man was taken to the hospital in Naples in a serious condition where he later died.
Friends and relatives of the victim allegedly vandalised the emergency room where the man was rushed to as reported by ANSA and other Italian news agencies.
A woman, aged 26 years and two men, aged 20 and 24, also suffered gunshot wounds but their conditions are not thought to be life-threatening.
The Italian Police is however investigating the shooting which took place in the Piazza Volturno area of the city, with Naples Prefect Claudio Palomba confrming on the RAI radio it had “nothing to do with the celebrations”.
The injuries were sustained from knife wounds to burns from firecrackers, and asthma attacks caused by inhaling smoke from flares.
Mr. Palomba however, confirmed that only seven people were hurt during the night, with some suffering fireworks injuries.
Napoli drew 1-1 with Udinese which was enough for the team to win their first Italian Title since 1990 when Argentina great Diego Maradona led them to two championships in 1986-87 and 1989-90.
Ahead of the game, the visiting Napoli fans held banners that had the images of late Maradona, eagerly anticipating the long-awaited Scudetto trophy.
The Napoli fans ran unto the field at the blow of the final whistle, as Luciano Spalletti’s side needed only a point to clinch the league title.
The away fans and players celebrated in Udine to kick off a long night of celebrations across the city of Naples.
At Naples, the home town of Napoli, fans flooded the streets with flags and lighting flares with firecrackers as they celebrated the massive feat.
A fan joked about the celebration saying: “It will be chaos, mayhem. We won’t sleep, we won’t work.”
US consulate also issued a security statement as at the time of the celebrations that “spontaneous celebrations could last multiple days” and then warned of “heavy traffic or road closures, significant use of fireworks, and alcohol consumption throughout the city”.
A happy fans confirmed that she has waited all her life for the title, she said: “I’ve been waiting for the Napoli Scudetto since I was small.”
She also went on to say that: “It’s a victory for the entire city, it’s wonderful.”

Napoli drew 1-1 with Udinese on Thursday to earn the point they needed to end 33 years of waiting which let to a wild celebrations across the city of Naples.
Thousands of fans stormed the pitch in Udine and also, at the Stadio Maradona in Naples and all around southern Italy’s biggest city.
Victor Osimhen scored the decisive goal in the second half as Napoli’s current stars came back from a one goal down to win the title for the first time after the era of Diego Maradona.
