Mohamed Salah is the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year for 2022

    Liverpool forward, Mohamed Salah is the winner of the 2022 Football Writers’ Association (FWA) Footballer of the Year award. The association announced that the 29-year-old Egyptian footballer is the winner of the award earlier today, April 29, 2022.

    The Football Writers’ Association is an association of football journalists and correspondents writing for English newspapers and agencies. It presents the Footballer of the Year Award, the oldest and most distinguished award given in the domestic game.

    In the 2022 edition of the FWA award, members of the association voted Mohamad Salah as the best player in English football based on his performance in the 2021-2022 season.

    Salah succeeded Manchester City defender, Ruben Dias who won the 2021 edition of the award after leading City to win the Premier League title and play in the final of the 2021 UEFA Champions League.

    Mohamed Salah has been the most consistent player at Liverpool for the past three seasons. He played so well last season that most football pundits wanted him to win the most prestigious football award, Ballon d’Or but he didn’t.

    So far in the 2021-2022 season, Mohamed Salah has continued to dominate the game in all the competitions that Liverpool are involved in.

    Salah helped Liverpool to win the EFL Cup earlier this season in which he played just 120 minutes of football. He also helped Liverpool to get to the final of the FA Cup after playing 90 minutes of football.

    The 29-year-old Egyptian footballer has scored 8 goals and provided one assist in 11 UEFA Champions League games this season which helped Liverpool to get to the Semi-final of the competition.

    Through his help, Liverpool are on the verge of making it to the final of the competition. Recall that Liverpool beat Villarreal 2-0 in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-final round on April 27. The Premier League side are expected to travel to Spain on May 3, 2022, to play the return leg.

    Also, Mohamed Salah has scored 22 Premier League goals and provided 13 assists in 31 league games this season. Salah is currently the highest goalscorer in the league. He has scored five more league goals than second-placed Cristiano Ronaldo of Manchester United (17 league goals) and Heung-Min Son of Tottenham Hotspur (17 league goals).

    Also, Salah is currently the highest assists provider in the Premier League (13 assists) one more than his teammate, Trent Alexander-Arnold.

    In all competitions this season, Mohamed Salah has scored a total number of 30 goals and provided 14 assists in 44 games. He is the only player in the league this season that has made 310 touches in the box.

    Mohamad Salah who joined Liverpool from Roma on July 1, 2017, for a transfer fee worth €42 million has until June 30, 2023, before his contract with Liverpool expires.

    On July 2, 2018, Liverpool extended his contract which has been earning him around £200,000 per week according to reports.

    Ahead of the expiration of the contract in 2023, Liverpool have been trying to renew Mohamed Salah’s stay at the club. But Salah is reportedly demanding 400,000 per week, a demand Liverpool is unwilling to meet yet.

    Hence, there are speculations that he could leave Liverpool this summer for a club that could grant his demand. Real Madrid has been the major club linked to him so far.
