MLS Colorado Rapids Suspends Max Alves For His Involvement in Unlawful Sports Gambling

    The Colorado Rapids have suspended Brazilian midfielder Max Alves for his involvement in an unlawful sports gambling.

    The Colorado Rapids took to their social media account to react to the incident, stating, “We are aware of the reports regarding a Colorado Rapids player in connection with unlawful sports gambling.”

    “We take matters of this nature seriously and seek at all times to protect the integrity of the game.”

    “The player has been removed from all team activities while MLS conducts an investigation into the matter.”

    Alves was among the group of players under investigation after receiving an undisclosed payment from match fixers. Also, Alves tried to bring in former Houston Dynamo player Zeca into his criminal act.

    According to the spreadsheet taken by the authorities, it was discovered that Alves received a total of $12,000 from the fixers.

    Alves has not been charged for his unlawful sports gambling, as investigations are currently going on. However, the security authorities in the Brazilian Public Ministry had charged 16 people, including seven players in connection to the scandal.

    Alves allegedly paid $9,000 to the referee to receive a yellow card in a match against the LA Galaxy in the 65th minute on September 18, 2022.

    The Brazilian is currently on a $293,000 salary after he joined Colorado Rapids from Flamengo in January 2022 for a sum of $1 million.

    After the team defeated La Galaxy by two goals to one, the Colorado Rapids side is set to welcome Philadelphia Union at home on May 14, 2023 at 2:30pm. 

     In 13 outings between the two clubs, Colorado Rapids had won four matches, drew six and lost three matches to the Philadelphia Union side.

    In addition, the last outing between the two teams ended in Favour of Philadelphia Union who defeated Colorado by 6-0.
