The manager of Arsenal football club, Mikel Arteta has identified the inability of his players to be ruthless in opponents’ box-eighteen as the reason for the club’s two successive defeats in 5 days.
On February 2, Arsenal visited Wolves for their 22nd Premier League game of the season, unfortunately for Mikel Arteta and his boys, Wolves defeated them 2-1. Not only that, they ended the game with two red cards.
On February 6, Arsenal visited Aston Villa for their 23rd league match, unfortunately again, the club could not do much and had to suffer a 1-0 defeat.
All Aston Villa needed to defeat Arsenal was a deflected shot Ollie Watkins played in the 2nd minute of the match. After the goal, Arsenal could not do much despite enjoying 67 percent of the possession and recording 14 shots.
After the match, the club’s coach, Mikel Arteta said his players had the opportunity to win the match but they weren’t able to take their chances in the box-eighteen.
He noted how much the club dominated every department of the game, a “strong performance” that didn’t earn the club any point at the end of 90 minutes.
“It was a really strong performance again today,” Mikel Arteta said. “We completely dominated the game, we dominated every department and we should have won the game.
“But, in the Premier League when you just give a goal to opponents, and then you are not ruthless in the box, you cannot win these games.
“That’s something we have to do better [be more ruthless] and that’s something that has cost us in the last two games.
“As you could see me I was really animated for a few decisions and one big decision, that I will not discuss here as well what happened.
“But it is what it is. It is not an excuse. Regardless of those decisions, we have to win the game. It is as simple as that.”

The 1-0 defeat in the hands of Aston Villa has left Arsenal on the 10th spot on the league table with 31 points in 23 league games, 9 points away from 4th placed Liverpool that still have a game in hand.
Mikel Arteta to be without Thomas Partey again.
Meanwhile, Arsenal’s summer signing Thomas Partey was a casualty in the match against Aston Villa. The 27-year-old Ghanaian star who just returned from injury had to leave the game in the 16th minute.
The player suffered a thigh injury for the second time in three months. He sustained the first one in December and had to stay out of Mikel Arteta’s team for over a month.
Unfortunately for the defensive midfielder, he could stay out of football for a couple of weeks if the extent of the injury is as serious as the one he suffered in December.
Arteta said: “He had a muscular issue so we had to take him off. He could not carry on playing. We will see the extent of the injury. He wasn’t feeling well enough to continue playing so we had to take him off.”
