Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta has admitted that the way the former coach of Newcastle United, Steve Bruce was treated made him worried about his “short” career.

Recall that less than 14 days after a Saudi Arabia-back consortium bought Newcastle United, most supporters of the club wanted Steve Bruce out of the club. They believed that he was not good enough to champion a new era.

Their agitation paid off on Wednesday, October 20, when the new owners of the Premier League side announced that the club has terminated Bruce’s contract on mutual grounds.

After the sack, an interview Bruce granted Telegraph surfaced. In the interview, the English tactician stressed that his job at Newcastle United could be the last of his managerial career.

The 60-year-old coach who has coached in 1000 games told the publication how he was called a “fat waste of space” and how people wanted him to fail.

“I think it might be my last job. It has been very, very tough”, he said. “To never really be wanted, to feel that people wanted me to fail & saying I would fail, that I was useless, a fat waste of space, a tactically inept cabbage head”.

In an interview with Sky Sports ahead of Arsenal’s Premier League game against Aston Villa scheduled to kick off at 20:00 later today, October 22, Mikel Arteta said people are discouraged from going into full management because of abuses from fans via social media.

The Arsenal coach believes that the abuse coaches are always subjected to online could get worst if nothing is done about it.

“It will only get worse unless we do something about it”, Mikel Arteta said.

“My worry is my career is very short. Steve has been doing it for years, over 1000 games. If he has struggled – somebody with that experience is struggling – it’s not an easy fix to that.”

Just like many other coaches whose teams did not do well at some point, Mikel Arteta was constantly under attack on social media due to the inconsistency of Arsenal.

In his reaction to the increasing cases of abuses directed to coaches, Mikel Arteta stressed that some people now prefer to work in the background instead of being a coach.

“I think it’s already started in our society as well that it’s easier to take the comfort zone”, he said. “The easier thing is to sit next to someone or be in sport science or an individual coach or something like that.

“Hopefully not. This is what we cannot lose because there are a lot of people with great talent, great capabilities. This cannot be the filter for somebody to decide whether they need to be there or not.”

Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta needs to beat Aston Villa or get a draw from the team to improve the club’s position on the league table. Arsenal are currently sitting on the 12th spot with 11 points in 8 games.

While their today’s opponents, Aston Villa, are sitting on the 13th spot with 10 points in 8 games, just a point away from the Gunners.
