Mesut Ozil is one of the many people who could not hide their pains after Arsenal woes continued in the 2020-2021 season with a 2-1 defeat in the hands of Everton.

The embattled German midfielder took to his Twitter page to share two emojis, one signifying that his heart was broken while the other signifying that he was crying over Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat in the hands of Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday.

During the visit to the Merseyside club, Arsenal’s Rob Holding gifted the host the first goal by scoring an own goal in the 22nd minute of the first half. From that point, all Arsenal could do was to pass the ball around without creating enough clear cut chances.

Arsenal continued to enjoy the possession until in the 34th minute of the match when Everton’s Tom Davies’ fouled on Ainsley Maitland-Niles in the box-eighteen. The referee awarded a penalty for Arsenal which Nicolas Pepe took to level the scoreline in the 45th minute.

When Arsenal thought they could at least end the first half with the 1-1 draw, Everton’s Yerry Mina headed in Everton’s second goal in the 45th minute from Gylfi Sigurdsson corner.

Throughout the second half, Arsenal could not create anything extraordinary despite having more of the ball. The Gunners had 13 shots and only two of the shots were on target.

The lack of creativity in the midfield reminded some critics of Arsenal’s coach Mikel Arteta, that a certain Mesut Ozil is rusting away at the club. Ozil used to be one of the most creative players in the Premier League before he became an outcast at the club.

Since June 2020, the 32-year-old midfielder has not been given a chance to play for Arsenal despite still having less than a season left on his contract with the London club. Even though there has not been a clear reason why he is not being used, the former Germany international has continued to use Twitter to show support for Arsenal that he has been a part of since 2013.

Though most fans of the club believe that the current set-up of Arsenal needs the creative input of a player like Ozil, Mikel Arteta decided not to register him for this season’s Premier League campaign. Hence, he has been earning £350,000-per-week without kicking a ball.

As the pressure is mounting on Mikel Arteta to perform and get the right results for Arsenal, so is the pressure mounting on the coach to allow Ozil into his plans. He might not have a choice but to do so since it has become obvious that Arsenal lacks creativity in the midfield, a service that Ozil can offer. But Ozil whose contract with Arsenal will expire in June 2021, has to wait until January to know whether he can feature for Arsenal under Arteta.

Since September 2, 2013, that Mesut Ozil left Real Madrid to join Arsenal for a transfer fee worth €47 million, the German midfielder has scored 44 goals and has provided 77 assists in 254 appearances.
