Lionel Messi edging over Ronaldo still makes them a lifetime rival of the Ballon d’Or award

Despite Lionel Messi edging over Christiano Ronaldo with the record sixth Ballon d’Or. The duo still remains the only rivals of the award as they exist in every selection.

Moreover, they have taken over every edition of the award for over a decade. Luka Modric could only break the row earlier because of the obvious controversy with Ronaldo.

Ashley Cole wishes that a defender wins the Ballon d’Or again since Fabio Cannavaro in 2006. But understands it is hard to break in the era of Messi and Ronaldo.

The Argentine beats Ronaldo and Liverpool defender, Virgil van Dijk to emerge winner. Modric also took over Rafael Varane’s chance of becoming a Ballon d’Or holder first time in his career.

Frenchman Rafael Varane has a chance to become the first defender in 13 years to win the award. Having won the 2018 World Cup and Champions League should have earned him the award.

Also, the Netherland star, Van Dijk won the 2018 Champions League with great performance for his international team. Along with his defensive records. Still lacks behind this year’s victor, Leo.

So, no one has been able to come between both international stars. It is vital to say that everyone cannot overlook the rivalry and domination by the two.

Italian defender, Cannavaro in 2006 beats his fellow countryman, Buffon, and French striker, Thierry Henry to win the crown.

He guided Juventus to win the Serie A title in the 2005/06 season and captained Italy to the 2006 FIFA World Cup. The legendary defender led the Italians to win the World cup over France (the runners-up).

He, therefore, became the third defender to win the prestigious award and the last till this present time.

Former England left-back, Cole, however, believes Barcelona’s Messi and Juventus forward Ronaldo remains truly the best players in world football.

The former Chelsea left-back says it is tough  “You want different positions maybe being credited with how good they’ve played in that season, but to be honest I don’t think you can look outside of Messi and Ronaldo.”
