Mauricio Pochettino of Chelsea has taken out time to explain why Enzo Fernandez cannot be Chelsea’s captain.
Enzo Fernandez is one of the players that Mauricio Pochettino met at the club after he was appointed the manager in July, 2023.
The Argentine’s performance has improved in the new season after a tough first six months at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea are still struggling in the Premier League. They have only picked five points from their opening five matches.
Mauricio Pochettino was asked this question after Conor Gallagher was handed the armband last weekend.
The armband on Gallagher looked weird last weekend as veteran defender Thiago Silva is still seen as a top figure in the order of seniority in the squad.
While it seemed like a disrespect to Thiago Silva, who mostly captained Chelsea last season, the Brazilian showed no little interest in contesting the decision.
Mauricio Pochettino, speaking on it, said: “Thiago is an experienced player that doesn’t need the armband.”
Mauricio Pochettino also added: “Then I think it’s important to build something for the future. Not only the present but the future.”
“He is there and the captain is not only to put the armband on your arm.”
The Argentine added: “To clarify, I think maybe it was Thiago to give it to Enzo but Enzo is still struggling with his English.”
“If we need to communicate with the referee and everything I think Conor can perfectly do the job and for me I prefer Conor than Enzo because I think Conor can speak normally, English.”
“I think Enzo is still not ready to be a captain. It is not only because of character or personality or profile,” Mauricio Pochettino explained.
“It’s about you need to communicate with the people and if you don’t manage the language properly you cannot be captain no? I don’t know. Maybe I’m wrong but it’s my opinion.”
