Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic is reportedly set to leave the club in January and reunite with ex-teammates Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez at Inter Milan.

Matic played with both players under Jose Mourinho and current manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer before they were offloaded during the summer transfer window. Also, the Serbian midfielder has fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford this season.

A move to San Siro in the New Year will also see Matic work his former boss Antonio Conte. The midfielder worked with the Italian coach during the pair’s time at Chelsea.

The Red Devils have an option to give the 31-year-old a short term deal until the end of next season. Recall that Ashely Young and Juan Mata were given the same deal last season. However, United could sell the player if Inter offer a substantial fee for him.

The Serbian has struggled with injury this season and has featured in only six games in the Premier League and Europa League. During his time out, Scott McTominay and Fred have been in superb form and have been favoured to be Solskjaer central midfield pairing. Also, Paul Pogba’s return from injury would mean Matic’s game time will be limited.

Last week, Matic featured in the 4-0 win against AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League and he could still be called upon by Solskjaer, with United facing Colchester in the Carabao Cup quarter-final on Wednesday.

According to the Telegraph, Inter are ready to secure the services of Matic as Conte searches for reinforcements in midfield. Injuries to key men such as Nicolo Barella and Stefano Sensi has seen Inter struggle in the Serie A.

Conte knows he must strengthen his midfield in January ahead of a busy year at home and in Europe. The Nerazzurri are chasing the Serie A title, the Italian Cup and have dropped to the Europa League.

A 1-1 draw away to Fiorentina saw Conte’s side once again surrender top spot to Juventus in the title race, with business in January set to be decisive for the two title chasers.
