Chelsea has started reaping the benefit of the £22m invested in bringing Edouard Mendy to the Stamford Bridge from Rennes after making top-notch saves against Manchester United again.

The Senegalese goalie was top notch in the Premier League clash against Manchester United as he kept his side in the game. His impressive performance was frustrating to United striker, Marcus Rashford whom he made two huge against on Saturday.

This made his coach, Frank Lampard and some football pundit to commend him for quickly settling into the team. From the look of things, Mendy, who got injured during the international break might have dislodged Kepa Arrizabalaga to the number one shirt.

Rashford on the other hand hit the headlines for his work off the pitch. He was looking forward to continuing his scoring form after netting the winner against PSG in their Champions League opener. Despite being in the thick of things at Old Trafford during the Premier League clash, Mendy was there to stop him.

The goalie initially stopped Rashford when he was clear on goal before flying through the air to parry a shot that that going into his net as both teams settled for a goalless draw.

The 28-year-old was also his team’s saviour in their Champions League clash against Sevilla, saving a goal bound ball with his finger tip that came with top notch reflex.

“His performance was very good. You rely on your goalkeepers in those moments in a tight game, not full of many chances.

“Rashford’s first chance was a mistake from us, the one at the end was a moment of quality from him. He showed us what he is there for.

“We brought him in for his quality. He showed great composure in the games he’s played already and with the saves, today in a tight you rely on the moments,” delighted Lampard said after the game.

Mendy opens up on his relationship with Arrizabalaga

The 28-year-old has also opened up on his relationship with Arrizabala, who has endured a woeful last year or so at Stamford Bridge. This made it no secret that Mendy was signed to take over as Chelsea’s number one.

Despite their competition for the number one spot, Mendy maintains a ‘very good relationship’ with the former Athletic Bilbao man.

“I have a very good relationship with Kepa. The group of goalkeepers we have, we are all very open, and all of us understand that the team is the most important thing here and doing what is right for the group. Our relationships are already very good.

“We work well together and are pushing each other every day to improve ourselves and to improve each other, and we know as goalkeepers that we have to stay unified and that is how things are going at the moment.”

Is Arrizabalaga excited sitting on the bench for a new signing? obviously not, but that is what is happening at the moment. All he needs to do is to chin up and impress Lampard that he is ready to fight for his -place within the sticks.

This might therefore be the end of the Spanish goalie at Chelsea. It won’t be surprising to see the Spaniard leave the club probably on loan in January in a bid to keep his place in the Spanish national team.

Edouard Mendy now among top six goalkeepers

The inconsistent show of Arrizabalaga led Lampard to bring in the Senegalese, who played a key role in Rennes’ best defensive records in the French top-flight last season.

With such signs shown, he could well have a similar impact in southwest London. After three starts, the stop-stopper has helped a usually shaky Blues backline to concede just one goal.

Therefore much expectations are placed on his shoulders.

“To be at a club where such great goalkeepers have played is fantastic and very important to me. I am aware of the expectations that surround the goalkeeper position at Chelsea, but I am not going to put any pressure on myself and compare myself to legends here.

“I have only just arrived so my aim is to carry on progressing and when the coach asks me, to make sure I am there for the team and helping with their success,” the goalie told the media.

His performance has seen him to be rated among the leading top-six goalkeepers. This is coming from recording two clean sheets in the two Premier League games he has featured.

He has now kept more clean sheet than any of the top six. According to Reddit, others in the top six include Alisson Becker, David De Gea, Brand Leno, Jan Oblak, and Manuel Nuer.

This could be a good sign of things to come from Mendy.
