Mason Greenwood took to social media to express his gratitude to Getafe and the club’s fans for the unforgettable experience he had during his time with the Azulones.
The 22-year-old featured in Getafe’s final La Liga match of the season, where they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Mallorca on Sunday, May 26.
Despite the result, Greenwood wanted to acknowledge the support he received from the Getafe family throughout the season.
In his heartfelt message on Instagram, Greenwood thanked the club and its fans for making him feel welcomed and appreciated during his time in Spain.
He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to play alongside his teammates and represent the club on the pitch.
Greenwood wrote on his Instagram handle: “Incredibly grateful to the Getafe family and fans for an amazing season, Thank you for making me feel welcomed and one of your own. I enjoyed every second, alongside my teammates and club”
Greenwood’s farewell message hinted that his loan deal with Getafe will not be extended, suggesting that he may be returning to Manchester United after his successful stint in La Liga.
However, Greenwood’s final game of the season for Getafe was marred by a head injury to goalkeeper David Soria, leading to him losing consciousness and requiring ambulance intervention.
The match was paused in the 73rd minute due to Soria’s injury after colliding with a Mallorca player outside the penalty box.
Physios attended to Soria on the field, with a sheet covering him, and the game was delayed for 11 minutes for the ambulance to arrive.
Getafe’s 1-2 loss to the visitors saw them finish 12th in the 2023/24 La Liga campaign.
The defeat coupled with Soria’s head injury prompted Greenwood to tag the final match as a “bitter-sweet ending.”
He said: “A bittersweet ending, but it was a pleasure to play for you, I wish you all the best”
The oxymoronic expression means that while he is sad to be leaving, he is grateful for the memories and experiences he gained during his time with the club.
