Mason Greenwood of Manchester United, who was detained in January on suspicion of rape and assault, will remain free on bail after a hearing in court.
Following the online publication of pictures and videos, the 20-year-old forward was detained and interrogated on suspicion of threatening “to kill”.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) asked the courts to extend his bail, which ought to expire in April.
Recall that the striker was detained on accusations of rape, assault, and death threats; a court hearing was held on Thursday as a result.
A GMP spokeswoman confirmed the bail extension and stated that no more information would be published until charges were filed or the player was freed with no further litigation.
The statement said: “Following a hearing yesterday (Thursday 23 June 2022), a 20-year-old man arrested on suspicion of rape, assault and making threats to kill on Sunday 30 January 2022 remains on bail. As the outcome of bail reviews does not impact the progression of investigations, Greater Manchester Police will not be providing any further updates in relation to this case until the suspect is charged or released facing no further action.”
At the time of publishing this report, no dates for any future hearings have been set. The academy graduate was supposed to appeal for his bail to be extended on April 30 and report to the police station from home, but that was delayed until recently.
What happened to Mason Greenwood?
Football player Mason Greenwood is a product of the Manchester United youth system. The young player made his official debut in a home loss to Cardiff two months after making his late-substitution debut in United’s 3-1 victory over PSG in March 2019. Greenwood participated in United’s preseason tours in 2018 and 2019.
The 20-year-old was detained on Sunday 30th, January 2022 on suspicion of rape and assault of a young woman after social media images and videos were posted online.
The Greater Manchester Police (GMP) officers were allowed extra time to examine Greenwood, who has not been officially identified as the suspect and was remanded in custody until he was released on bail.
Since the Premier League match against West Ham on January 22, Greenwood has been on the sidelines for Manchester United due to a suspension. Nike has also acknowledged that their agreement with the forward has ended after first halting it.
The striker, who has made one appearance for England, was immediately prohibited from participating in team activities with Manchester United until further notice.
Aside from Nike that terminated its deal with Greenwood, Electronic Arts has taken him off of the Fifa 22 game’s active squads.
