Marseille have announced the signing of forward Mason Greenwood from Manchester United in a deal worth up to £27 million.
The 22-year-old Getafe loanee will be joining the French club in a lucrative deal that will enable him to revitalize his football career.
The contract is set to keep the 22-year-old at the French Ligue 1 club until 2029.
Mason Greenwood return
Greenwood, who came through the ranks of Manchester United’s academy, has not played for the Premier League club since January 2022 following sexual and physical assault charges leveled against him.
He made his competitive senior debut for United in 2019 in a Champions League match against Paris St-Germain.
But his career went on a free fall due to a legal battle. However, in February 2023, the charges against him, including attempted rape and assault, were dropped.
Following a six-month internal investigation into his conduct, Manchester United announced in August 2023 that Greenwood would be leaving the club by mutual agreement.
He then joined La Liga side Getafe on loan, where he scored 10 goals and provided six assists in 36 appearances to revitalize his career.
Meanwhile, Marseille will be hoping that Greenwood can continue his impressive form and make a significant impact for the team in the upcoming seasons.
Marseille mayor Benoît Payan, chastised the French club for their plans to sign Greenwood, but that didn’t stop the deal from going on.
Greenwood’s Contract Between Manchester United and Marseille
Manchester United may still have a chance to see Mason Greenwood return to the club in the future, despite his recent transfer to Marseille for £27 million.
It is reported that there are some controversial clauses in the five-year deal Mason Greenwood signed with the French club.
A sell-on clause has been included, meaning that Manchester United will receive 50% of any future transfer fee for Greenwood.
Additionally, there is a buy-back option in his contract, allowing United to bring him back to Old Trafford if they choose to do so.
However, reports suggest that the likelihood of United activating the buy-back clause is very low.
While Greenwood’s future in Manchester is uncertain, it seems that he is embracing the new challenge in France with Marseille.
