Mario Gotze has finally gotten himself a new club after over two months of being out of contract with Borussia Dortmund. The 28-year-old attacking midfielder left Dortmund this summer after the club failed to renew his contract.

The Germany international who scored the World Cup-winning goal for Germany in 2014, only made 21 appearances for Dortmund in the 2019-2020 season which signaled his eventual exit from the club.

After a long wait for a suitable club, a Dutch side, PSV Eindhoven came to his rescue and gave him a two-year contract which will see him play in the Eredivisie until 2022.

“I had a lot of offers this summer but I am a man of feeling and make my own decisions,” Gotze said.

“I feel I am ready for a very different challenge. I’m confident this should be a very comfortable transition for me.”

Before things went sour for Mario Gotze at Borussia Dortmund where he first made his name in the Bundesliga between 2009 and 2013, the attacking midfielder scored a total number of 45 goals and provided 61 assists in 219 games in all competitions for Dortmund in 8 years.

When he left the club in 2013, Mario Gotze joined Bayern Munich and spent three years with the German champions before he returned to Dortmund in 2016. Before he left Bayern, Gotze scored 36 goals and provided 24 assists in 114 games for Bayern.

In his time at Dortmund, he won two Bundesliga titles (2010–11, 2011–12), two DFB-Pokal (2011–12, 2016–17), and DFL-Supercup in 2019. While at Bayern, he won three Bundesliga titles, two DFB-Pokal, one UEFA Super Cup, and one FIFA Club World Cup.

The fact that he has won the FIFA World Cup with Germany, won all the titles in German football, and he is just 28-year-old, didn’t matter when Dortmund failed to renew his contract until he had to go to an Eredivisie club for free.

“I kept on training and got myself fit for the new adventure,” Mario Gotze told PSV website on Wednesday. “I am looking forward to joining my new teammates for full training and preparing myself for the upcoming fixtures.”

PSV will be in action on October 18 against PEC Zwolle in the Eredivisie league. The club is currently sitting on the second spot on the league table after three wins and a draw in four games.
