Marcelo, a Brazilian defender, has denied rumors that he was sacked by Lyon for laughing and farting.
After being demoted from the senior squad, the 34-year-old centre-back – full name Marcelo Antonio Guedes Filho – quit the Ligue 1 club in January.
The cause for his demise, according to the French publication L’Equipe, was a series of disciplinary violations, including improper laughter during team meetings and constantly passing wind in front of teammates.
“Thanks to L’Equipe, I’ve returned to Twitter after a long period to deny all the charges,” Marcelo posted on Twitter, adding, “Journalism nowadays is a joke!”
He hadn’t tweeted since May of last year.
It wasn’t the first time the player’s demeanor had been questioned. He was expelled from the senior Lyon team in August of last year after being discovered laughing during captain Leo Dubois’ statement following a crushing defeat against Angers, in which he scored an own goal.
