Manchester United suffered a second consecutive loss at Old Trafford in the Premier League as they lost 1-0 to Crystal Palace On Saturday.
Manchester United failed to replicate the comfortable 3-0 win they recorded against the Eagles in their Carabao Cup match on Tuesday.
However, that was not the case in the Saturday afternoon encounter as Crystal Palace handed United their second loss at their home ground.
The Carabao Cup match was lost from Crystal Palace’s perspective due to the fact that they rested a number of first-team players for that game.
Well, the matchup on Saturday was quite different from that of Tuesday as they produced the perfect away performance against Manchester United.
Manchester United saw Rasmus Hojlund’s effort cleared off the line by Tyrick Mitchell – one of their best chance in the match.
The visitors subsequently took the lead when Andersen superbly drove a first-time effort into the top corner after a free-kick.
Erik ten Hags’ men struggled to find a way through the Palace defense and when they managed to, they couldn’t beat Sam Johnstone.
Johnstone made two vital saves in the second half to preserve Palace’s lead against their host, Manchester United.
Manchester United would have equalized but the Palace keeper was on hand to stop Bruno Fernandes’ dipping effort before keeping out Hojlund’s bullet header.
The win means Crystal Palace are now above the Red Devils in 9th while the hosts drop to 10th position in the Premier League.
This was also the fourth defeat in seven Premier League games for Erik ten Hag’s men, who have had their worst start to a league season after seven games in 34 years.
Pressure Pile Up For Manchester United And ETH
Manchester United was hoping to finish September on a positive note after losing three straight games to begin the season. A victory over Palace would have been their third straight.
The home crowd may have reasonably expected more of the same against the Eagles after easily defeating Roy Hodgson’s team on Tuesday.
They had a strong start, so it first appeared like that might be the case, but Mitchell’s goalline clearing turned out to be somewhat of a turning point.
Following that, Palace began to appear more dangerous while attacking, and Manchester United grew more and more irritated as they were unable to break their opponents down.
Following a pair of penalty calls that were overturned, the home crowd booed the officials at full-time to vent their annoyance.
United had numerous opportunities to steal a draw, but their day would not come thanks to a combination of subpar finishing and strong Palace defense.
