Manchester United are reportedly planning a bid for Bayern Munich centre back Matthijs de Ligt, as they are aspiring to build a strong defence ahead of next season.
Bayern Munich have put an asking price of £42 million on the defender. A media outlet in Germany revealed the fact that Manchester United have begun an internal discussion with Bayern Munich bosses over a potential deal.
The Red Devils are in the market to replace Raphael Varane, who left the club as a free agent at the end of the season.
Other defenders, like Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof, have uncertainty at the club, with the new owner looking forward to reshaping the squad in a bid to compete for silverware next season.
It is understood that the Manchester United hierarchy had agreed personal terms with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite. However, they are short of Everton’s asking price of £70 million.
Matthijs de Ligt had worked with Erik Ten Hag while he was at Ajax. During Erik Ten Hag’s tenure at Ajax, the Dutch defender was made the captain of the Ajax side.
The defender is capable of playing as a centre back and also on the left side of the defense. He is a better alternative option to Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite.
