Manchester United legend David de Gea has officially joined Italian club Fiorentina after being without a team for over 15 months.
The Spanish goalkeeper, who was the number one choice for the Red Devils for 12 years, signed a one-year deal with the option for a further year with the Serie A side.
De Gea, known for his incredible shot-stopping abilities, is set to earn around £2.5 million per season with Fiorentina.
Recently, De Gea was spotted training at a national team facility in his home country, Spain.
In a video posted on social media, he captioned, “Ready to rock”, the goalkeeper hinted at a potential comeback to professional football.
Meanwhile, renowned Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano also confirmed the deal stating: “David de Gea, just landed in Florence to sign in as new Fiorentina player. He’s back.”
Despite his departure from Manchester United in July 2023, de Gea’s reputation as one of the best goalkeepers in the world remains intact.
With the fourth-most clean sheets in Premier League history, the Spanish keeper is sure to bring valuable experience and skill to the Serie A side Fiorentina as they aim for success in the upcoming season.
David de Gea Takes Pay Cut to Secure Fiorentina Move
In a surprise turn of events, Manchester United legend David de Gea has agreed to significantly reduce his salary demands to join Italian club Fiorentina on a one-year contract.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the 33-year-old goalkeeper will earn €2 million (£1.6m/$2m) per season, a substantial decrease from his initial demands.
De Gea’s reduced salary expectations paved the way for the deal, which was previously hindered by his “unrealistic salary expectations.” The Spanish keeper was also linked to Genoa and several Saudi Pro League and MLS clubs, but those deals fell through due to his initial high demands.
Fiorentina has now secured the services of one of the world’s top goalkeepers, who will bring his expertise and experience to the Serie A club. The move marks a new chapter in de Gea’s career, following his departure from Manchester United after 12 years.
Former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is making headlines once again, despite being out of action professionally.
The Spanish international, who was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson back in 2011 for a then-British record fee of £17 million, has left a lasting legacy at the club.
De Gea went on to make 545 appearances for Manchester United, surpassing the legendary Alex Stepney to become the goalkeeper with the most appearances in the club’s history.
The Spaniard won the Premier League, the FA Cup, two Carabao Cups and a Europa League title.
He also won two golden gloves and earned the Player of the Season award four times during his time at Old Trafford.
What’s next for
The Spaniard has reached Florence on Friday, August 9 for medicals to complete his move to Italy.
He will sign a one-year contract with an option to extend it for another 12 months.
