Manchester United are considering signing USMNT captain Christian Pulisic on loan from Premier League rivals Chelsea, according to sources.
The youngster, who cost Chelsea £58 million ($70 million) when he joined Borussia Dortmund in 2019, has drawn interest from Newcastle United, Juventus, and Atletico Madrid.
The 23-year-old Pulisic is dissatisfied with Thomas Tuchel’s lack of starting opportunities and wants to play more minutes before the 2022 World Cup in Qatar this winter.
The winger, who is the most expensive player in North American football history, has failed to get consistent first-team minutes at Stamford Bridge despite being an important member of the USMNT and set to captain his nation in Qatar. In Chelsea’s first two Premier League games, he was a substitute.
Chelsea are open to considering loan proposals because they are aware of the player’s frustration. The player’s preference is Manchester United.
Tuchel has previously permitted fellow attackers Timo Werner and Romulu Lukaku to transfer to RB Leipzig and Inter Milan, respectively. There is also interest in Callum Hudson-Odoi. For Anthony Gordon of Everton, Chelsea has made a bid.
Newcastle are interested in Pulisic because they know he can play in three different positions across the front three, including both wings and as a number 10 or 8, and Manchester United have expressed interest in Pulisic before he joined Chelsea.
After relocating to Stamford Bridge, Pulisic participated in and won the FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, and Champions League final. In the 2021 Champions League semifinal away game against Real Madrid, he scored and was named player of the match. He replaced Mason Mount in the first leg and offered assistance.
In the quarterfinal versus Porto, he was again named man of the match after drawing 11 fouls, the most in a single Champions League game in the previous five years. Chelsea won the first leg, which was contested in Seville, 2-0, but fell short in the return match, 1-0.
Seven finals in three seasons were played by Pulisic, including three FA Cup finals in which his team lost and one Carabao Cup final.
