Manchester United have been hit with £65,000 fine following a chaotic FA Cup quarterfinals win over Fulham at Old Trafford on Matchday 19, 2022.
The spirited clash between the two sides at the Theatre of Dreams descended into chaotic scenes as tempers boiled between the players and the coaching crew at the dugout.
Manchester United won at the blast of the final whistle but the near-brawl faceoffs was too glaring to ignore hence the clampdown by the FA was not a surprise.
The first half ended barren as the Craven Cottage club went toe-to-toe with Manchester United in the spirited clash.
Tensions boiled over in the second half after Aleksander Mitrovic opened the scoring for the away side to give the London club the lead.
After Fulham’s opener early in the second half, a pressure from Manchester United saw former Chelsea star Willian handle the ball in the penalty box.
Manchester United players immediately ran to the referee and called his attention to the handball, asking for a spotkick.
After VAR check, the penalty was awarded and Willian was sent off with a red card.
Fulham boss Marco Silva was also sent off for his outrage towards the penalty decision.
Aleksander Mitrovic, the goal-scorer , was also a casualty of the heated penalty incident.
Angrily remonstrating in front of the referee, Mitrovic shoved Kavanagh in frustration protesting Marco Silva’s red card.
He was issued with another red card due to the outburst and Fulham ended up playing nine against eleven from the 70th minutes with Marco Silva off the touchline.
Two more goals from Marcel Sabitzer and Bruno Fernandes sealed the win for the Red Devils but the FA had swung into investigations on the incident.
Manchester United were charged for failing to control their players during the incident.
Mitrovic and Marco Silva apologized for their outburst towards Chris Kavanagh during the game, admitting wrong doing.
Mitrovic was banned for eight matches with the FA reportedly insisting on extending the ban while Marco Silva was also suspended.
Now, Manchester United have been slammed with a £65,000 fine by the FA.
The fine was confirmed in an FA statement on Thursday which states Manchester United have admitted wrongdoing by failing to control their players during the incident and have been fined of the said sum.
“Manchester United FC has been fined £65,000 after its players surrounded a match official during the 71st minute of their tie against Fulham FC in the FA Cup on Sunday, March 19, 2023.
”The club admitted that it failed to ensure its players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and do not behave in a way which is improper.
