Manchester United fans staged a protest against the club’s plan to bring back Mason Greenwood to the squad during the Premier League opener against Wolves.

The Red Devils opened their 2023/24 Premier League campaign against Wolves at Old Trafford. Raphael Varane scored a header to gloss a scrappy performance by the Red Devils as they ran out with a narrow 1-0 win; thanks to a glaring VAR blunder that denied Wolves a penalty after Andre Onana’s reckless challenge clipped Kaladzic to the ground in Man United box.

While some Man United fans heaved a sigh of relief, narrowly surviving Wolves spirited challenge at Old Trafford, some fans were preoccupied with protests on Mason Greenwood’s saga, turning Old Trafford into demonstration ground.

The protesting fans, who are mainly led by Manchester United female fans, took to Old Trafford and to the outskirts of the sports complex to make their feelings on Mason Greenwood’s imminent return known.

They carried different placards with different captions all asking the club not to bring back Mason Greenwood.

One of the placards blasted Manchester United’s subtle attempt to bring back Greenwood. It reads; “Don’t leave the decision up to the women’s team, you spineless, motherless f***s.”

Another protest placard wrote in bold prints a protest statement by the club’s female fans, rejecting Mason Greenwood’s return.

The placard reads; ”FEMALE FAN DEMAND END VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN. NO GREENWOOD RETURN.”

The protest by sections of Man United’s fanbase is coming at the backdrop of early feelers that Man United are poised to announce Mason Greenwood’s return to the team as the 2023/24 campaign kicks off.

There were reports the club will reinstate Mason Greenwood back to the squad before the Premier League opener against Wolves. But that did not happen.

Sources close to the club revealed the club are set to wrap up their internal investigations into the rape saga and were close to a decision with Manchester United Chief Executive Richard Arnold said to be the final arbiter on Greenwood’s Man United fate.

Mason Greenwood has not played for Manchester United since January 2022. He was suspended from the squad following his arrest by the authorities after a gruesome footage of him allegedly assaulting his girlfriend, Harriet Robson, went viral.

Greenwood was charged after the arrest but in a shock move by the prosecutors, all charges against him were dropped and he regained his freedom.

However, he was told to stay away from Manchester United squad after charges against him were dropped with the Red Devils proceeding on an internal investigation into the alleged rape saga before taking a decision.

With United set to take a decision following the internal investigations, Mason Greenwood has been spotted on series of individual training sessions as he warms up to return to action after months following the allegations.

According to reports, Manchester United are closing in on a decision on the player and have seemingly concluded their internal enquiry into the incident.

It is still unclear whether recent protests from section of the club’s fanbase will have a bearing on the final decision on Greenwood.
